Entirely new to me, but I enjoyed it.
She has a strong voice, I wouldn’t buy it, I like it.
Mornin’ Christopher. Marisa is extremely popular here and all her concerts are invariably sold out. Look also for Ana Moura on YouTube and for the late Amália (Rodrigues) who is generally regarded as one of the greatest exponents of the more traditional form.
Fado translates literally as ‘fate’, ‘destiny’ or ‘doom’, and the underlying theme is nearly always of saudades – ‘yearning’, ‘nostalgia’, ‘homesickness’, this even if you are singing in your own village square! It sums up the Portuguese character to a tee.

OZ: I first heard about Mariza from a friend of mine who has gone to Portugal nearly 40 times over the years. The Portuguese, much like the Japanese, have a fatalist streak. Perhaps it comes from having spent the majority of their history as a small, poor country next to the haughty behemoth known in more polite company as Spain? Earlier this summer I was reading Eça de Queiroz’s “O Mandarim” and detected much of that in there, although through a satirical lens.
Christopher – Portugal and Spain get on just fine – just like England and France. 😉

Maybe Portugal gets its angst from being England’s oldest ally? 🙂
