Photo competition results – July 2011

Although there were not many photos entered this time around there were some very interesting shots.

Val’s contribution showed an unexpected ghostly shade across the face of her concentrating subject which had the effect of making the viewer look again to discern what was there: a strangely disconcerting image.

Toc’s image was very eye catching with several strong elements contained within it: the parallel lines of the paving contrasting with the diagonal movement of the unaware pedestrians (and their shadows) which contrasted strongly with the self portrait element of the photograph. The colours worked well too, with the grey background and other more neutral colours enhanced by the strong orange and blue clothing of the man walking towards him.

Ara’s photo of herself in the window taking a photo illustrates well how we may not actually notice reflections when taking the photograph, and how they can dominate the results. I suspect that this is a cropped image so that the real subject, the Buddleia, is pushed out of the frame and we can focus on the poise and concentration of the photographer.

O Zangado’s picture shows the epitome of a wonderful holiday: sunshine, pool and beer with a cooler, on a sun-lounger! So made me want to be there – this is a clean crisp photograph with a hint of tilt which seems appropriate in the circumstances.

Jan’s pier photograph is a lovely image which is has strong design elements. It could almost be  a mapping image, with small islands and white sandy beaches set in a beautiful blue sea.

Overall, although Toc put up his picture with a covering note ‘Not an entry, just a reflection of me,’ I feel this is the winner! Well done Toc…..I do hope you’ll take up the challenge and set the new competition.

No time to lose. No, time to lose. Make time to stand and stare.... Did you see that?

  1. Well done, Tocino, and well judged, Nym.

Yes, it was a cropped image, and yes, I didn’t notice my reflection until I zoomed in on the photo! 🙂

  2. Pseu,

Many thanks for running the competition, taking time to encourage members to submit their entries and then giving a very professional analysis of those entries. I have to say, reading your comments about mine has made me look at it with fresh eyes.

For me though, whilst I feel chuffed that you picked mine I will have to stick with my caveat Not an Entry. To do the job properly as you did, takes some time and for myself, at the moment I do not have that time.

    Thank you again

  3. I congratulate you Toc, your image is a worthy winner, and Pseu made the right choice.
Its amazing what others eyes, sees in a photograph, we all see something different, something beautiful, or something that just catches the eye, and we think “I like that”.

I’ll say it again, a worthy winner Mr Toc 🙂

  4. I shall have to draw second place then! I therefore name Jan as the setter of the next competition. 🙂

    I do hope you’ll take it on…..

  5. Uh?? moi? Quelle horreur! 🙂 oh flip. ok well i’ll be sitting in front of the TV a lot over the weekend so i can’t pretend i won’t have time. Delighted to, Pseu. Gimme 24 hours to think about it?

    Well done Toc!! 🙂

  6. Well done Toc and thanks Pseu for all your efforts. I did look through my photos for an entry but no joy – I didn’t seem to get the time to go out and make a new one! Must try harder!

I look forward to the next one 😀
