The ‘V’ Bombers

They were graceful beasts weren’t they? Especially the Vulcan.

Came across this chappie on my kitchen floor – he was about as big as my hand.  Unfortunately for him, the flash attracted my Owner, and his rate of climb on take-off wasn’t fast enough.  She calculated the rate of climb and trajectory and picked him out of the air like a black, furry Bloodhound.  Very pleased with heself she was, too.

  1. Oddly enough, Bravo, I have just spent the day re-reading Rowland White’s account of the Black Buck missions, flown by Vulcans against Port Stanley airfield. Vulcans came into service in the year I was born and used to howl on take-off, which always made them dear to my heart, as you can imagine. It was something to do with the shape of the air intakes, powerful Olympus engines (which were later used on Concorde) and atmospheric pressure. Perhaps Ferret would know the technicalities? The only man I ever envied in my life was a RAF pilot I met back in the mid-nineties, my age and a Group Captain, OBE, AFC, ex-Vulcan captain.

  3. My goodness OZ, aren’t you young! I was already a teenager when the Vulcans arrived. 😦

  4. Bearsy – Far be it from me to suggest that The Bear is grey instead of white :-

  5. Personally, I liked the look of the Victors most, but the Vulcan was a fine plane!

  6. I hate moths but that Oleander Hawkmoth is rather lovely, Bravo.

Wow OZ. Fab Vulcan film. Remember that from so many RAITs at Fairford!!

  7. Val – Bravo’s photo is remarkable.

The moth even has the ogee-delta leading edges as employed by Concorde and the Vulcan B2, together with the camouflaged pattern of the latter.

  8. I never saw a Vulcan take off, more’s the pity. i do recall, though, one afternoon in Nairobi, (60 or 61) gazing out of the window of an upper-floor classroom at Delamere High School for Boys. Off in the distance, out over the plain, there was a flash of white which resolved itself into a Vulcan turning, (I guess,) onto finals for RAF Eastliegh. It was such a clear day I could see all the major detail. Fantastic sight.
