At the risk of starting another controversy, I cannot resist reporting that the Australian Government has rejected a call from the Muslim Council of Australia for the introduction of ‘a non-extremist version of sharia law.’
In a submission to a parliamentary inquiry into a new policy on multiculturalism, the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils has urged the government to consider “legal pluralism” for Muslims.
Now I have no absolutely time whatsoever for our Attorney General, Robert McClelland, for his treatment of Julian Assange – but he is reputed to have said: :
There is no place for sharia law in Australian society and the government strongly rejects any proposal for its introduction…
As our citizenship pledge makes clear, coming to Australia means obeying Australian laws and upholding Australian values…
Australia’s brand of multiculturalism promotes integration….
If there is any inconsistency between cultural values and the rule of law then Australian law wins out…
People who migrate to Australia do so because of the fact that we have a free, open and tolerant society where men and woman are equal before the law irrespective of race, religious or cultural background…

It was Badger who explained to me that the muslems will never get a foothold here. After reading three (or is it now four) years of the slow advancement on islam, I had concerns, but he’s right, the moslem minority are too shit scared to stir the pot here, perhaps in a hundred years or so but not in (my) the foreseeable future.
I can quite happily live with that š
