Greenpeace loses charity status case
Greenpeace New Zealand’s political activities mean it cannot register as a charity, the High Court has decided.
Greenpeace appealed against a 2010 ruling by the Charities Commission which found its promotion of “disarmament and peace” was political rather than educational and while it did not directly advocate illegal acts, Greenpeace members had acted illegally.
Now, I wonder if our own courts will man-up and agree that vandalism and criminal damage are not charitable activities?
Not holding my breath…
Good call, Bravo

I should not think so. Most UK judges at the moment seem to be superannuated hippies!
I do admire Greenpeace’s activities against the Japanese whaling fleets. I don’t care how much vandalism and criminal damage they cause there. They haven’t got round to sticking a bomb on any of the ships, à la Rainbow Warrior, at least.
That was the cheese eating garlic breath surrender monkey French security services I seem to remember.
I’m surprised in the ruling, knowing NZ as I do. They’re quite a green lot down there. Fair point I suppose, I guess they’ll just relocate their office to somewhere that does give them tax breaks.
To be fair to them ,they tend not to have as many anarchists, sorry idiots that vandalise, as other similar organisations like the ALF lot for example. I haven’t heard much of GreenPeace recently in the UK
Sheona, so, criminal damage is OK as long as it’s not against you, is it? Interesting.
Sheona: most Japanese can’t stand whale meat. It’s almost impossible for them to sell and virtually all of it goes to waste. They try to serve it in schools, but children rarely eat it. At this point it seems as if the Japanese government is simply doing it to show Greenpeace that they will not be intimidated by Green hooligans.
