Ah well a British legend and a really nice guy Henry Cooper has passed away. I remember watching the famous match at the cinema when he knocked down the then Cassius Clay (Mohamed Ali).
I met him a few years ago at a reception really funny and a true gentleman of sport, unlike the yobs that infest sport today.
I’m not a boxing fan. I still can’t quite get my head around the idea that punching people and trying to knock them out is ‘sport’.
But I do remember listening to Henry Cooper talking once or twice and it certainly changed my notion that all boxers were simply ‘bully boys’ pretending to be sportsmen.
A great yet humble man from a sport I just don’t get. He won the Sports Personality of the Year twice, a true reflection of his standing with the general public.
I didnt realise that he didn’t even have a trainer when he fought Ali – shows what self motivation can do.
RIP ‘enry.
Yep, a true gent – and stayed true through it all.
I say Bravo, you nicked what I was going to say, you bounder. In which case I’ll second it. Although I hate boxing, I admired him.
One of the good guys.
I’m not a boxing fan at all, but he seemed to be a very personable sort of chap.
RIP.
Enery and ‘Arry (Carpenter) both got ring-side seats now. Yes, Henry was a gentleman and an ambassador for sport and the under privileged.
