No One Does It Better

We only put it on to watch the News…

I suppose I shouldn’t say who sat and watched it all the way through, who, like me knew every hymn, and was pleased to note that at least some part of it was in ‘Proper’ English? No I’m not going to say who …. 🙂

Great Pageantry and excellent organisation. And to those who begrudged a few pounds on the event – it was wonderful to see so many Brits being – well British.

  1. She certainly looked like a princess, I didn’t go for his uniform though, I though he’d wear something similar to what his brother was wearing. Still … a good show.

  2. You beat me to it, Boadicea. What a great spectacle and all the crowds seemed so happy. I expect they were the 12% of Brits who julietee tells us want to keep the monarchy and the other 88% were sulking somewhere.

I loved the Duchess of Cornwall’s outfit but not the Princess Royal’s wallpaper confection. And what on earth was Eugenie/Victoria wearing on her head? She looked like a character out of a children’s TV programme – a Tombliboo or some such.

    Magnificent!

  3. You are all so predicatble! Shame on you Bearsy!

More importantly, I went round 4 under handicap finishing birdie, birdie and missed the whole thing! Good day all round!

    😀

  4. Well done, Cuprum. According to Le Figaro a recent Ipsos Mori poll shows only 18% of those Brits asked want to get rid of the monarchy. But Republic was having a “not-a-wedding-party” in a south London park to try to raise its profile. Does that mean they were taking advantage of the Bank Holiday caused by the royal wedding? Shouldn’t they have ignored it and gone to work?

  5. How on earth does one edit comments here? It should have been “its” above without apostrophe.

  6. What a great day. I watched the lot and it made me feel proud to be British. I rather liked the way they departed Buck House.

  7. See what GB can do when you don’t let politicians have a damn thing to do with it?

Frickin republicans have all gone very quiet haven’t they?

  8. Ferret :

See what GB can do when you don’t let politicians have a damn thing to do with it?

    Well said Ferret. 🙂

  9. I was dreading this wedding. However it was a magnificent piece of theatre. The whole thing in the Abbey was superb, the music, the choir all of it. There appeared to be no hitches and I don’t think any other country could have done it better. I have heard today from someone who seems to know about these things, that it was Prince Charles who kept Blair and Brown away…good on him!

  10. Jazz

Bearsy read a report that it was William. But, I don’t think too many people care who it was – most seem to agree with you “Good on them”. 🙂

  11. sheona :

Ferret and Tocino, have you seen this post on the DT staff blogs today?

Cheers sheona. If the republicans think that all their ills will be removed by the abolition of the Monarchy, then they are as dull as as I have always thought they were. B and B should be strung up.

  12. >According to a recent CBS News/ New York Times poll, Queen Elizabeth II has a 61 percent favourable rating among Americans, with a mere 7 per cent holding an unfavourable view of the British monarch (a further 25 per cent are undecided). That compares with an average job approval rating this week of 45.5 percent for the US president according to RealClear Politics, with some recent polls placing him as low as 41 percent.he CBS/New York Times poll also showed strong support in the US for the monarchy in Britain, with 71 per cent saying the Royal family “is a good thing” for the British people, with just 15 per cent against. A striking 18 per cent of Americans (almost one in five of the electorate) thought a royal family would actually be a good thing for the United States too.<

  13. Thanks Sheona,

If you read the tripe JulieT c&p’d the other day it was mostly jealous sniping about it ‘not being fair’ and ‘we want the chance to do that’. So not republicanism then, just a desperate desire to have a bit of it for themselves.

    Jazz me too,

I was not looking forward to it, but found myself drawn in by the brilliance of it all and the party atmosphere it generated throughout the land. Good on em for managing to personalise their wedding enough without treading on any of the tradition. A perfect gig and a true credit to the country.

On the practical side, I see a very fitting future K&Q who have the adoration of the nation. Charlie and Camilla must surely realise they are doomed.

On the WTF side. What in the name of all that is good and right did princess ugly have perched on top of her head? Was she saving a pretzel in case the service dragged on a bit? What the hell was she thinking?

An officer chum of mine who got himself down to the mall yesterday put a comment on facebook which said it all.

“To the rest of the world. Beat that!”

    I like it.

  14. It was indeed a wonderful event.

Kate was radiant, she appeared to have made it her day despite the required pomp and ceremony, good for her!

  15. I was reminded of Hathor, ancient Egyptian Goddess, initially a cow-goddess symbol of nature and fertility… whoever picked that hat for her had a wicked sense of humour….

Slow down! The Republicans here are in a minority, but they do have the right to their opinions – even if few agree with them… 🙂

  16. Boadicea,

Of course they have a right, but so do I to argue with there assertions. Or in certain cases, borrowed nonsense theories.

  17. Ferret – no one’s saying you can’t 🙂

I must admit I was surprised how heated and emotional the ‘discussion’ became!

  18. I don’t mind it when folk like Cuprum, explain their view and have a valid point. But when others with no obvious agenda of their own just a need to be on the counter side of the flow, try to validate themselves with borrowed, C&P non points. Well it grips my fur.

Most annoying was the claim of honorary military positions. Both Andrew and Harry have acquitted themselves admirably in the front line of warfare, while William has saved countless lives as a full time SAR pilot. The military treasure the patronage of the Royals and consider it a great honour to have them among the ranks. Such utter nonsense from someone who obviously knows so very little about the actual facts of the matter.

  19. Well, that’s one view, I suppose.

But from where I’m sitting, I was genuinely upset by the aggression and disdain that was shown towards Cuprum and Julie. I expect we will have lost Julie altogether, and it’s only because Cuprum is such a nice chap that he’ll still be here.

Hope your operation went successfully, Ferret.
And while I’m on the good wishes stakes, I hope your abscess was comfortably treated, Cuprum. Can’t have been that bad if you played a good round afterwards.
    🙂

  20. Well Gor Bless ‘Em, I said, purely for the Bank Holiday. We made the most of the day off by going to the sunny gorgeous Gower and conquering the Worm, but watching the TV clips later, it all looks rather splendid. The bride and her maid of honour were totally gorgeous – those dresses… and the sight of all those horseguards on their fabulous steeds clip-clopping about is always stirring. This is the beginning of a new era for the Royal Family. Let’s just hope they do their bit to boost the UK economy.

Got an amusing wail of a text from my future daughter-in-law (wedding planned for July) in Hong Kong “Oh noo. They are singing Bread of Heaven. Everyone will think we nicked it from the Royal Wedding!”

  21. Morning all!

I’m genuinely glad you all enjoyed the pagentry, I agree, quite a spectacle if you like that sort of thing. No harm done. Mrs C said it made her proud to be British and felt the UK’s profile was raised again after 20 years of negativity. Fair enough, I can’t really argue against that.

I still don’t get it, but, as only Ferret (and our esteemed leaders, B & B) seem to understand, they’re only my opinions! As I said before, I serve my country with pride, just because I see that I serve the people not the queen doesn’t make me a bad person!

Quite what an opinion poll of what americans think of the monarchy shows I don’t get the relevance. The BBC says that the monarchy has an 80% approval here in the UK, but I doubt many of that 80% understand why or of what they are approving. But that’s fine, debates like these in a wider environment that our great chariot could only be healthy, surely?

Having listened to many of your points, I begin to see that there is a bigger picture of democracy and the political system that their failings perhaps endorse my viewpoint that a monarchy is not appropriate anymore, and I shall start another discussion later about that.

In the mantime, I hope Ferret is well after his Op, my abscess is still there but going down with very strong anti-biotics and I have an extraction booked for Friday the 13th May!

Have a great weekend all. 😀

  22. I missed it Bearsy,

Cuprum has ne’er received any ad hom from me chum. As for JulieT, if I had been able to blog fully on her disgraceful piece of C&P I think I may have gone postal too. As it was I excercised extreme self control and abstained from diving in.

If she has done one because of the flak she received from posting that rubbish and pretending to endorse it, then more fool her I am afraid. Sorry Bearsy but thats just the way I see it.

  23. Thanks for the wishes all, I can hear again, but my throat is as sore as hell. Worth it though. I was very well looked after and am recuperating happily at home.

  24. tocino :

Cheers sheona. If the republicans think that all their ills will be removed by the abolition of the Monarchy, then they are as dull as as I have always thought they were. B and B should be strung up.

OMG! I do hope my comment was not taken as an insult to the site owners. I was of course referring to Blair & Brown. 😦

  25. I quote Bearsy’s comment,

“But from where I’m sitting, I was genuinely upset by the aggression and disdain that was shown towards Cuprum and Julie. I expect we will have lost Julie altogether, and it’s only because Cuprum is such a nice chap that he’ll still be here”

I didn’t especially follow that debate as I felt I had nothing special to contribute-

but I am saddened that we may loose Julie through how people reacted to her post. She is an interesting blogger who has stimulated debate, and has considerable CW skills too. If you see this Julie, don’t be put off.

  26. Ferret, I made no pretence that I was writing an original essay. As I said, I quickly cobbled the arguments together, as some people had requested them. To be fair, I should have stated my sources, but I hadn’t realised that posts on charioteers were in the same league as academic papers.

And yes I am jealous. That’s what heirarchical systems do to people. I’m a bit old for Will, but I did want to be Diana. Just as well I wasn’t in the end, I suppose.

  27. sheona :

And what on earth was Eugenie/Victoria wearing on her head?

    Magnificent!

Fifth and sixth in line to the throne. It would only take a shooting party accident.
(To be fair, I have no idea what they are like underneath, and I am not very interested.)

  28. I keep thinking it’s Sunday today after all that stuff yesterday… but no… only Saturday and another afternoon in the garden promised.

  29. Good on yer Julie! 😀

(Bang, bang…whoops! Queen Zara sounds like a grand idea!)

    Sorry, smutty man-comment alert!

  30. Nym,

“but I am saddened that we may loose Julie through how people reacted to her post. She is an interesting blogger who has stimulated debate, and has considerable CW skills too. If you see this Julie, don’t be put off.”

I totally agree, it would be a great shame to lose JulieT she does write some good stuff.

But you cannot complain if you walk into a bar full of partying paras with a placard saying “All squaddies are botty bandits!” when you subsequently wake up on ward 3. Make a ridiculous generalisation against something that some folk hold dear and you must expect some flak.

  31. Well said, Julie!

I notice that comments #14 and #18 on this thread consist of two links and a paragraph of cut and paste – and it wasn’t you that posted them. Sauce for the goose … ?

Ferret, chum, just make sure you remember your last sentence –

Make a ridiculous generalisation against something that some folk hold dear and you must expect some flak

the next time someone attacks me or Boadicea for being “fake-Aussies” or having red hair.

  32. Yup that Bear,

If you have a go, expect a response. I have always maintained said. I remember having a pop at gingers, but I don’t recall ever calling you or Boadicea a ‘fake aussie’ heaven forfend.

  33. Now your point Bearsy,

There is nowt wrong with linking to a news item or review to reinforce your point i.e. #14 and #18, but that is wholly different to the tripe that JulieT was trying to pass off as valid argument.

I cannot believe you can’t tell the difference between the two.

  34. I did not intend to suggest that you were the sole target of my comment, Ferret; I have been slagged off by several Charioteers who hold reprehensible beliefs that are contrary to mine.

A couple have even attempted recently to browbeat Boadicea – they are now conspicuous by their self-imposed absence. Boadicea may be slow to anger, unlike me, but she takes no prisoners.

  35. Thank you for the compliments, Pseu and Ferret.

Ferret, I don’t think you should have made that unkind remark about Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice. They are mere chickens. In five years time they will have had a chance to detatch themselves from the whole silly business, and if they decide to remain they will be fair game for any rude comment that comes their way, but for now, give them a chance.

  36. I shall remember not to post links or acknowledge my sources in future then Bearsy and just post the whole article.

  37. “The BBC says that the monarchy has an 80% approval here in the UK, but I doubt many of that 80% understand why or of what they are approving.”

Sounds a bit patronising to me, cuprum. In the same vein as Will Self’s article, which I can’t put a link to, but it’s mentioned by staff blogger Brendan O’Neill on today’s DT staff blogs which I won’t put a link to either. Sorry guys, the Bear has growled.

  38. I arrived back at The Cave far too late to participate usefully in the three-day debate here despite searching frantically for a personal angle, but can I just say (as a staunch monarchist) that I have enjoyed reading ALL the shades of opinion very much?

    OZ

p.s. Ferret – glad to see you back and as feisty as ever. 🙂

  39. Bolleaux! Make that “frantically”.

    OZ

Correction made. I was surprised to find that ‘franticly’ is apparently an acceptable alternative spelling to ‘frantically’. 😕

  40. Sheona – concerning your comments #50 and #51.

I did not prohibit the posting of links, nor did I imply it, hint it or suggest it.

Misquoting and applying reverse-spin is only acceptable when done for humorous effect; I see no evidence of any humour in the recent strident attacks by monarchists on colleagues who do not share their quaint beliefs.

  41. I don’t think I could apply reverse spin if I tried, since I don’t know what it means. Normal service will be resumed.

I don’t think I can be accused of misquoting Cuprum, however, just of giving my opinion.

  42. I haven’t misquoted anyone either, nor have I been strident, nor have I attacked anyone.

I continue to deprecate a hasty C&p from wiki posing as ‘argument,’ with no reason.
