In Praise Of Bearsy.

I really enjoy Bearsy’s comments and find it a great shame that at times they do not stay in place for very long and a lot of readers may miss them. He does indeed speak the truth. Were it not for him, this site would not exist. All of the technical stuff is down to him. We all take it for granted and are able to do what we do here because of him.

IMO, the site is now probably bottoming out. There are now, rather like MyT, little self supporting groups who whilst not as vocal as those on MyT are prepared to blank out others. This of course is normal. We support who we like and ignore who we don’t. This is not a big deal on something the size of MyT, It does have an impact on a site of this size though.

At the end of the day, I find it strange that those who appear not to agree with the way the site is run, don’t just leave. A semi flounce does nothing and backstabbing comments even less.

  1. I’ll tell you guys a little truth, I offered Bearsy some suggestions that he might wish to teach you guys in order to improve the look of your blogs.

BUT THEY COULDN’T ACCEPT THEM 😦

They are already swamped with all the effort of fixing the numerous mistakes many bloggers do much of the time, and my suggestions would only have made it much harder for them, not easier.

Truth is that running a site is incredibly hard and time consuming and much more like a labour of love than anything else. Especially when they receive no remuneration out of it.

I myself have over 30 years of programming experience and I find it incredibly difficult just designing a site, let alone running it. It takes at least 6 people to run it in shifts and that’s at a minimum.

Bearsy, Boadicea and Soutie do it on their own!!

Where would you guys have gone after the unmentionable site went to shite?

I remember full well it was all of you guys that were screaming at the top of your keyboards for a new site that would be free of strife, arguments and mischief from stalkers and trolls.

Bearsy and Boadicea were kind enough to provide it. Soutie did not have to help out but he did.

Perhaps they are owed a beer or two.

( Don’t worry about me, just chuck me a BBQ and I’ll be fine ) 🙂

  2. Thank you both.

I, too, am beginning to wonder whether the site is bottoming out. It can’t run without posts from people – and I don’t want to run it if I have to deal with some of back-stabbing comments that have been posted from just one or two here lately.

  3. Boadicea – You couldn’t be more wrong, this is not a sign of the site bottoming out, it is a sign of the site having reached a critical stage in its development, it happens to all good sites.

The next step is for the site owners to get tough and tell the offenders to either ship up or ship out, you don’t really have any other choice if you wish to see the site grow and follow the direction you wish it to go.

Think of yourselves as the managers and coaches of a football team, good players are wanted but not if they refuse to pass the ball or do not allow others to play their own game. 😦

  4. You’ve been talking to Bearsy Donald – or has he been talking to you! I try to run a ‘laid back’ site, but I’m beginning to suspect that he might be right and I need to throw those out who continually push their luck – and my patience!

  5. Boadicea – You can have the world’s greatest football players but the fans do not come to see individuals, the come to see the team. Those who have no wish to belong to a team have no right to wear the shirt.

Good as they might be …. unless you wish to lose the world cup … you have to cull the Maradonas 😦

  6. Toc, good post. The first , and possibly the most important aspect on a blog site is, that we are not communicating face to face, we are not conversing with the real person, we don’t see expressions, winks, anger and laughter.
If Bearsy and I had been in the same room when he went on and on about the errors I kept making whilst adding images into a comment box, we would more than likely have had a good laugh, a hug and a beer, as it was, his comments p…ed me off so much, I decided not to enter any more photographs into the competitions here, and I haven’t. I’m on many photographic sites, including WordPress, and adding an image is so simple, most designed with blondes in mind probably 🙂
And as for clicking the ‘More’ tag, for goodness sake 😉

That aside, I agree with Donald, it must be hell designing and keeping watch over it, you’d have to pay me a small fortune to do it, and they do for free.

A blog site gives people the chance to say things they wouldn’t dare say in face to face conversation, so its all down to that.

So, yes Beasry, you have annoyed me, I dislike your occasional obnoxious attitude, but hey, when you are next in this country, perhaps we could meet up for that beer, I’m convinced I could get to like you. And you too might be surprised to find the blonde here is actually an intelligent, rather pleasant lady.

So, for what’s its worth, Chears Beersy.

Ooooops, should I correct those spelling errors ? Should I have used the ‘more’ tag ?
    Sod it, what the hell.

I was going to insert a lovely image here, just for the Bear, but as I’d only phukk it up, and set his teeth gnashing, I haven’t 🙂 🙂 🙂

  7. I’ve never been perturbed by the more modest number of posts on this sight. The posts are usually high in quality and interesting. I have a full schedule at university so I do not always post a lot. I can try to do more in the future and plan full well on keeping all of you abreast of the details of my Chinese and Montanan journeys this summer –pictures included!. I will have to confess, however, that I am one of those technologically helpless who is in near-constant need of divine (Bearsy or Boadicea) to help sort out the messes I manage to create.

  8. “A blog site gives people the chance to say things they wouldn’t dare say in face to face conversation, so its all down to that.”

I don’t see it that way at all. 😦

I have a government site with over 3000 members, most follow the rules but some not only don’t bother, first they break them, then come up with all sorts of excuses as to why the rules should be changed to accommodate their needs. I delete them without warning and give them no reason. I just do it.

What good are the rules if people think it is ok to to bend them to suit the occasion? It doesn’t wash! If one needs to say something to others that cannot be said face to face on this site then it is an easy matter to click on their ID tag and go to their site and do it there.

  9. Well I love it here and if I get censored or deleted I probably deserve it! I know I can’t spell, (well I can, I just can’t type!) and I don’t even understand the simple teccie explanations in the manual, but hey, it is all for fun.

I’ve said before I struggle with not being able to see the NVCs of the person writing the blog, but I do think overall humour is the main weapon of choice here.

What I love too is how much I learn on this site. We are collectively a fascinating bunch with alot to share. Bring it on! Obviously with the proviso I’m always right when it comes to sporting punditry 😀

Long live the chariot – I just wish I had some friends to recommend it to!

And Val….go on, post a piccie again!

  10. Zen my old cyber buddy,

The problem with warts is that whilst most of them are benign and are content to be where they are and do nothing, there are others though that are very dangerous and if not caught in time can do serious damage. The worst thing you can do is prod them.

I have known Bearsy and Boadicea via the internet probably longer than anyone on this site. They are both thoroughly decent people who, over the years have been of great support to me and continue to do so. Quite frankly, I’m surprised at the restraint shown by them since opening this blog site working so hard to make it easy for us the punters to use only to get a cyber kick in the teeth now and then by those who can’t be bothered to read the very detailed instructions they produce.

At the end of the day, many things happen here without us even having to ask for it. The dreaded ‘more’ is added as if by magic. It is of course, all down to the hard work of Bearsy, Boadicea and Soutie.

    Thanks folks.

P.S. If you don’t understand what I was saying about self supporting groups, just look who has posted here and who hasn’t!

  11. One is under no misapprehension as to Bearsy’s thoughts on most subjects. I’ll give you that toc.
    Vastly preferable to PC waffle.

More over, Bearsy is a great deal of fun — unless he is provoked, in which case he becomes the Bearmacht.

  13. Sorry, Christopher. I was merely acknowledging the bilingual pun – or attempting to, anyway. I am far too old and behind the times to know anything about a German pacifist SDF – is that for real? 🙄

  14. Bearsy: sorry mate, I can be a bit paranoid about WWII references. I assumed that you were joking, but just in case… Germany’s military is now for self-defence purposes only. That is part of Germany’s constitution. Interestingly, many in the US are griping about the fact that Germany does not take a more active role in world military affairs — even though the US was one of the main countries behind neutralising (and rightfully so) Germany as a military power.

    .

I’m sure that you will have noticed the ‘mouse’ that squealed the loudest has made an appearance on site? How very predictable. :-)

A cheap shot Toc and a little beneath you I feel.

Up until now I hadn’t posted here either, does that make me a clique follower too.

I think I take it for granted sometimes that B&B and Soutie know how much I appreciate their continued struggle with our IT ineptness. I shall take this opportunity to make it known that this furball is eternally grateful for all that they do, be it out of the goodness of their hearts or some masochistic desire towards self harm.

    Cheerz guys.

  16. You are probably right Ferret. Now, would you like me to edit your comment or would you prefer to let it stand? No skin off my nose either way.

  17. Sad to say LW I don’t have a group but if I did, you and your mates could certainly join. I rather like the look of the group. Which one is you? 🙂

  18. Toc, you misunderstand me, my comment was not aimed at B and/or B, but at the self righteous who abuse the spirit of the site.

    No prob’s Zen.

  20. Christopher – Affectionate you may not be if you say so, but you surely know the way to a wolf’s heart.

  21. Toc: I’m the cuddly one appealing to the camera for moderation, meanwhile the two in the back are deeply involved in a learned discussion of working mothers whilst ignoring me, story of my life really.

OZ: Well I like it here more than you do, so there.

  22. Ah! Thanks Sheona! My German is limited to restaurant menus, I’m afraid. Blame it on Google Translate.

Changes have been made made. 🙂

  23. Bearsy: perhaps it is best to leave German alone. It is a senselessly complicated language which demands utmost precision and is very unforgiving of mistakes. I often find myself grumbling about having been born in a German-speaking country, a fact which obliges me to actually have to speak the language.

  24. Thanks for that, bravo. It’s true that one learns something new every day. Apologies, Bearsy.

    Sorry for the delay Toc,

Do what you like with it chum, it was a point I wanted to raise with you and you have graciously acknowledged it. Job done. 🙂

Even in the real world, we all have some friends who will have nuffin’ to do with blah because (s)he said that blah blah was a bleep and so forth. Yooman nature innit?
