With respectful acknowledgements to Hilaire Belloc

This article is a joint effort, has Boadicea’s imprimatur and reflects Chariot Editorial Policy.

Technical Support
Boadicea, Soutie and I provide technical support, usually in the background, activating links, images and videos where necessary, and adding “More” tags and occasional layout and spelling/grammar corrections in posts and comments.   From time-to-time we provide information on how to do something, sometimes in excruciating detail.   Two points should be recognised –

  • Boadicea and Soutie are as familiar and comfortable with HTML as I am, except in rare esoteric corners. Please do not assume that a correction requires the Bear.
  • It occupies a lot of our time, so we don’t appreciate being criticised for our expertise, our friendly willing support, or for providing links to helpful WordPress pages.

Opinions and Views
Everyone has an opinion and is encouraged to express it on The Chariot.   However, please remember that we are entitled to hold opinions too, and we have just as much right to express them as you do.   This does not mean that our opinions are ‘site’ opinions, they are simply our personal convictions.

Robust disagreement is fine, in fact it is welcomed (The Chariot gets twice the hits/day when there are arguments), but again, expect us to disagree equally robustly if we feel strongly about a subject.   There are plenty of instances where Boadicea and I hold opposing views, but you won’t find us deferring to each other.

There are a few controversial subjects where our views are both aligned and strongly held.   Expect no mercy, and don’t cry.

Netiquette
It is remarkable and gratifying how polite and well-behaved Charioteers are 99% of the time, but there have been a few lapses recently that we’re going to nip in the bud before they go any further.

  • When you’ve had a skinful, stop blogging.
  • When Boadicea makes a ruling, that’s it.   “Resistance is futile.”
  • Bearsy is allowed to ask questions without WWIII being declared.
  • Don’t carry arguments or animosities from post to post.
  • Don’t make snippy comments or post gratuitous insults that have nothing to do with the post they’re placed on.   Sustained disparagement of any person, country or subject becomes boring.

Flounces and sulks are widely regarded as self-abuse, but if your psychologist approves, fill your boots.

A couple of specifics

  1. We shall continue to make changes to Charioteers’ material where it is necessary to preserve a consistent “House Style”.
  2. The words ‘racist’ and ‘bigot’ have ceased to have any real meaning in cyberspace; they are generally used as invective and as a vehicle for shutting down discussion.   Be prepared to see them replaced on The Chariot by the words ‘cherished colleague’.

A Queensland Bear with attitude

  1. I would say that sums up the position quite nicely.

Couldn’t agree more on your summing up of the members attitudes, a pleasant bunch indeed, in fact a top site!

  2. Bearsy & Boa – you have my full support, this is a great site and I will abide by its rules (or guidance as I’d prefer to call it!) I hope none of my behaviour has caused you to write the above!

How’s my spelling these days? 😉

  3. Cuprum – I’ve edited our comments and made everything sweet. Eyes OK, so far, thanks.
    About that refund … 🙂

  4. Kwalitah,

    No probs from my burrow.

Did you want to say snippy, or snipey/sniping? (Not even sure snipey is a word). 😀

I do love a good rumble.

Re: bigot and racist, perhaps we should adopt a House of Commons style approach. ‘The right honourable blogger is peddling an untruth!’ See how many ways we can call someone a social nasty without actually saying it plainly. It has never worked in the HOC so I don’t see any reason why it should here. 🙂

  5. Ferret – It was interesting last week in the Aussie House of Reps at question time, when the opposition at first tried to find ways of calling Julia a liar without using the word (which is much stronger in Strine than it is in Pom); after a bit they gave up and used the word, and the Speaker didn’t tell them to retract. But Julia was forced to retract her use of ‘racist’. 🙂

  6. Hee Hee Bearsy,

I can see it now, ‘Excuse me Mr Speaker but the RH prime minister is talking out of her arse!’ 🙂

  7. Oh dear. I hope it wasn’t me, though I fear it might have been. I want to be cherished too.

    Sob!

    OZ

  8. Oz, who wouldn’t cherish your ursine qualities? All the better to stroke you with! 🙂

  9. Ursine qualities???? Don’t think I have many of them. Can’t do the finer points of HTML, for instance. PLenty of lupine qualities, though. If you need a boar running down, a goat disembowelled or a sheep that never knew what hit it, then I’m your wolf.

  10. All very well, with the proviso that practicing and preaching get equal ‘air time’.

  11. Oooh, sharp intake of breath!

    Armchair – Check
    Cushions – Check
    Crisps – Check
    Beer – Check

    This should be fun. 🙂

    OZ

  12. Nah OZ, off up the greenhouse to prick out my leeks!
    Much more productive.
