I’d like to remind Charioteers that the January – February Poetry Competition closes at 12.00 midnight on the 15th Fenbruary.
Since Janus is not able to to adjudicate, and suggested a ‘popular vote‘, it would be much appreciated if everyone made the effort to vote.
Thanks!
Did my vote a while back Boa.
Did mine too, Ma’am, days ago.
OZ
I’m waiting until all the entries are in.
Since we only have one vote, I prefer to wait and then make my decision.
I’m also waiting, Araminta!
Sorry, I don’t go for this ‘last minute vote’ thingy. I’ll vote for whatever catches my eye at the time, so get your entries in early.
OZ
I will certainly cast my vote, Boadicea, so thank you for the reminder. 🙂
Sorry that wasn’t very clear, Araminta!
What I meant was that “I’m also waiting” for the last entry to go in! 🙂
No, I understood, Boadicea, and I agree with you, I’m waiting too.
Women! Harrumph!
OZ
Hello Oz, it’s just we are not so impetuous, perhaps? 🙂
Me too OZ.
Dear chaps.
But what happens if there is a stunningly brilliant last minute entry?
Oh, dear, sorry, Boadicea. 😦
But but, should we have a poll to decide when we should … er perhaps not!
Oh blimey. Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow…
‘Cos I look at the entries when I look at the entries. Some people do admittedly leave it until the last minute to slide in a beauty under the wire, but tactically they need the post to go cold until then, which is not good for the Chariot and they do not deserve to benefit. In My Humble Opinion. 🙂
OZ
Oz.
I’m not really understanding your viewpoint.
I don’t think it’s “tactics”, but some people have more time than others. A closing date is a closing date and all entries are taken into account until then, I would have thought.
I’m not sure it matters, but I just prefer to wait and then make my decision.
If this were a competition you were judging, I am sure you would do the same.
Araminta – Point taken. Of course if I were the judge I would not view any entries until after the deadline, but if there is to be an advance poll (and I’m not convinced of their usefulness either) then I’ll vote for the first submission I really like.
OZ
OZ – Janus specified a poll as the replacement for his adjudication duties, which he cannot fulfil. That’s why there’s a poll, and why this post is entitled, “Standing in for Janus”. Doh! 😦
Mornin’, Bearsy. Is the second mug of tea a bit slow in arriving then? 🙂 I made a comment a few days ago about a poll being a sensible alternative when the judge is otherwise indisposed, but I remain to be convinced that every competition needs one.
And I can read Latin, thank you very much. 🙂
OZ
Sorry for responding to your comment OZ. I will keep to my place and remain silent in future.
Bearsy, my dear chap, it was the ‘doh’ and the 😦 in your #18 that ticked me off and even then I replied with two smileys. I’m not that thick as wolves go and I wouldn’t ever write anything deliberately to offend a fellow Charioteer. Indeed I would be mortified if I did so even unintentiionally. 😀
OZ
I hope Janus’ indisposition is not illness and that he is OK. I missed the announcement,
May I propose that in view of the fact that the voting will now be the ‘decider’ ratre than a bit of fun, that to make it fair on late entrants it should be reset and kept open for 24 hours after the deadline? That way each submission will have a chance in the voting and we all can vote for our favourite once they have all been read?
Is there an option to set the voting so that each voter could vote for a first second and third place, thus giving points to three contributions? (Favourite poem 10 points, second 5 points third two points… or some such arrangement?)
Just a suggestion

I’ll have a word with the ‘poll-maker’! One can’t reset polls – it would have to be a completely new one. But, I am inclined to agree with you that the poll shouldn’t really go up before the final deadline in the case of it being the ‘decider’, as this one is. One of the problems, of course, is that not everyone looks in every day…
I don’t think that there is anyway to do a ‘first’, ‘second’ and ‘third’ voting. 🙂
Thanks Boa.
