  1. A great question Ara, I love polls but not on in house competitions, I’ve made my position perfectly clear elsewhere.

I have a feeling that some of us (well me) consider who the judge is before we enter and consequently what may (or not) tickle their fancy.

A poll on who will win this years Currie Cup would have far more meaning. 🙂

  2. Hi Soutie.

Yes, I gathered you were not in favour. I doubt if it will catch on frankly, but it’s not a bad thing to know how to do it!

  3. Evenin’ Araminta. I think on rare or very special occasions polls have their place, but should not replace the judge’s decision on the regular CW, pome and piccie comps. Since when was The Chariot a democracy anyway? 😀

  4. Hello OZ.

I agree with you about the Judge’s decision being final. It’s a very subjective thing, as Soutie, says and I think all the judges of these competitions choose what appeals.

  5. Araminta, I was able to vote on your poll without being logged in. That can’t be right. I could be wrong of course.

  6. Hi, Sheona.

I can’t tell if you voted, but frankly, it wouldn’t surprise me.

I think the “yes” vote has gone up, but it’s a bit of an unknown science.

My other poll has changed format slightly without any help from me!

  7. I believe that Sheona is correct and that anyone can vote, irrespective of membership. That is quite a drawback.

    It’s a shame I can’t get at the code, I could sort that problem easily. But since I can’t, I can’t! 😥

  8. Ara, I like the format as it without a poll, probably because there are only two dozen or so at most entering, and poll patterns MAY influence one’s choice. However, I would agree it is good to see the choice from a hundred plus readers, as this might buck the ‘experts’ view. (See CWJ’s directive on Twilight shots!)

  9. PG – the results of polls can be hidden apparently until after the result is announced, or indeed permanently, if it is concerns over those polled being swayed by the way the vote is going, before they cast their own vote. Given the contrariness of folk, some would vote for those least likely to win, if they saw the score beforehand, on the basis of chopping down tall poppies, or whatever the expression is, I am looking for!
On the specificity of what I am looking for, the next winner could throw it wide open by inviting us to submit for example whatever we thought was our best photo taken in the last two weeks, to really open up the field, although that can make judging a total nightmare!

  10. Yes, CWJ, you can easily hide or reveal the votes.

I didn’t look at my poll when I made the choice; and certainly wasn’t influenced by that at all.
It’s tricky though, throwing it wide open does indeed make it difficult to judge, but narrowing it down too far means you may receive fewer entries.

Tricky balance, but your new competition will hopefully inspire us to learn a bit more about the subject of photography.

I must admit to being woefully ignorant.

  11. CWJ – no complaints with your challenge! It will be interesting to read your judgments, and we may indeed learn something from your challenge. So thanks; perhaps I was quick in my comment to Ara. I shall certainly enter the competition.
