  1. It’s a great photo, Soutie.

Taking a wild guess: a taxi rank outside an airport in Rhodesia, 1940s. 🙂

  2. They had this sort of transport in Durban in the 50’s. The only difference was they were pulled by Zulu’s.

  3. Morning all.

I have frequently mentioned that my dad served with the RAF during WWII, the back of the photo (which by the way is one of those ‘pocket size’ pics 3 x 2 inches (7 x 5cm)) simply says-

    Taxi Rank
    Bombay
    1943

    We thought it hilarious 🙂

  4. Durban Rickshaws

They still have them, a tourist attraction operating along the Durban beachfront. Toc is quite right, all pulled by Zulus dressed in the most outlandish regalia!

You can read more about them here on the official Durban site.

It even includes advice on fares and tips!

(Durban has apparently been renamed eThekwini… don’t ask 😉 )

  5. Well I got the taxi rank and the decade – so I was only a few thousand miles off course!

  6. They are still a common feature in Calcutta – but the Rickshaw wallahs looked rather too dark for Bengalis. Probably South Indians working as rickshaw wallahs, as Maharashtrians are lighter, although of course a life in the sun there turns a European walnut brown.
On New Year’s Day I saw a rickshaw operating in Edinburgh, which is a neat role reversal of our colonial past. I couldn’t wait long enough to catch an Indian visitor hailing it, unfortunately.

  7. “Taxi drivers ponder their future after falling victim to the latest hit by a team of International horse thieves.”

There are certain neighbourhoods in San Francisco where things like that are frequently seen…
