Today, 19th January, marks the first full moon of 2011. The first full moon of any year is known as the Wolf Moon. I’m going out for a howl tonight. Anyone care to join me?
Just loping around. Extremely fond of roast boar in particular, meat in general and cooking on the barbie. Fish is good too.

I’m right behind you OZ.
I’m game, OZ! Oh dear, I mean I’ll have a howl with you any time.
Yes, dear Wolfie, I’m there!
Well, I never knew that!
On my way around the district this afternoon I saw the ghostly-faint mother-of pearl disc floating through clouds on a pale blue sky – and as the dusk descended the ghostly moon became more solid and luminescent – absolutely beautiful.
Hey OZ, how does it feel to have these Wolverines gathering around you 😉
Some stilton with your howl?
Bilby and Araminta – You’re most welcome. Watch this thread tomorrow evening.
Pseu – Cloud willing it will be even better tomorrow
Val – I would be more than a little disconcerted if only the blokes had replied. 🙂
OZ
Lovely shot, CWJ. I served a small Stilton as part of my New Year supper.
OZ
OZ, I’m already meeting a loony tomorrow and anyway I’m chicken.
Depends on the weather. I don’t have a fur coat.
PapaG – Interesting comment. We have ‘loony’ and ‘lunatic’ in English, referring to ‘lunar’, the moon. In Portuguese we have ‘maluco’ meaning mad and which comes from ‘ma lua’, bad moon. It probably also gave name to the Malucca Straits in the Far East, where Portugal used to export its loonies once upon a time in return for spices.
Sheona – I have an anorak you can borrow, sweetie. 🙂
Just been outside. The moon has a magical cloud halo around it. I need Val with a decent camera.

“Some stilton with your howl?”
I’d rather have stollen 🙂
Why not have Stilton with your stollen? And a glass of vintage port to keep them company?
Pseu – OK, I’ll bake a stollen if that’s what it takes and put a bottle of Moscatel in the fridge.
OZ
Bearsy – You, sir, are a gentleman of some refinement. 🙂
OZ
A wonderful image, Oz, sorry I can’t join you.
Never mind, Zen I’ll have an extra howl for you. 🙂 When are you going to feature Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) and Roger Hodgson (Supertramp) in your anthology of goodnights?

I’ll work on it!
I had hoped to get a photo of the Wolf Moon in Oz as an entry in your photo competition – but there’s another storm tonight and too much cloud …. growl! 🙂
For the geeks amongst you, there is a computer programming language called “Lua”!
I like the idea of the moon being made of Stilton!
How do we know the moon is made up of cheese? Because sailors have been to sea!
Sorted for you – OZ
And you need to get out more! 🙂
OZ
Thanks, Oz, voice activation is poor at spelling!
It tells terrible jokes too! 🙂
OZ
Everyone knows it’s not Stilton. It is Wensleydale.
Pseu – Don’t believe everything Gromit tells you. Are you coming out for a howl tonight?
OZ
OK, the Wolf Moon has been visible in the northern hemisphere for over one hour. Go outside and have a howl. I did.

Stuff the neighbours – you’re all too old to worry about what people think.
🙂
OZ
Howl.
I’ve just taken some photos and they are awfully fuzzy. I think I need a trip, OZ, 😦
Oh, I could have sworn I typed tripod, but maybe I do need a trip! 😉
I too have tried snapping the moon, but too much glare….
Araminta – Sigh! OK, I’ll drive all the way to Lisbon or Faro and pick you up. Will Eff be returning with you when you go by any chance?
OZ
Photo coming up!
Nice try, OZ, but she seems awfully happy with you!
I haven’t heard a word from her for ages, thankfully. 😉
Very atmospheric, Araminta. I’d be happy to have a howl at that.
Eff speaks of little else, but Das Fürballen would miss her.
OZ
It’s from the kitchen door of the Gothic Horror.
OMG will turn up any minute: we seem to share views; very spooky.

That’s what a Wolf Moon does for you.
OZ
A beautiful moon. Seems incredibly bright.
Welcome Jan. Take your camera, go and have a howl, take a picture and get back to me.
OZ
You too, Pseu
OZ
Can’t Oz, sorry. Need one of those telescopes to put my camera on. Would have been nice earlier though, when the moon was hanging lower in the sky.
Jan – Go and have a howl anyway. It’s good for the soul. 🙂
OZ
Just been outside again. A clear sky and almost bright enough to read a book. I had another howl and now the deeper recesses of The Cave beckon. Nighty night everyone. Thanks to all for your comments.
OZ
Night to you, OZ. 🙂 xx
I had a good howl, OZ (with you, and for you). Such a bright moon.
Night night and sweet dreams, OZ. xxx
Morning snaps have worked to a degree. So beautiful this morning as it lowered itself down onto the horizon.
Pseu – So why aren’t the results here for us all to enjoy, young lady?
OZ
Just for the record, I poked my snout out of The Cave just now, and there is a lunar halo. Imagine a dartboard with the moon as the bullseye and the ‘doubles’ ring as the outer limit. Within the two, it is jet-black with the occasional jewel of a star whilst the rest of the sky is smokey with a thin cloud backlit by the moonlight.
Absolutely magical. Excuse me, I can feel another howl coming on.
OZ
OZ I have put them on my own blog…
Weird goings on around me this week – emotions definitely running higher than usual, conflicts, upsets… can it be connected to lunar activity?
Is the moon pulling on our hormones?
From Pseu’s blog
Thank you, Bearsy. I was wondering whether to do that or not and glad that you did. It’s a wonderful shot that deserves wider circulation. I have already suggested to Pseu that she may wish to put it into the Photo Comp.

It’s well known in schools that the children go ‘loopy’ at full moon and when it’s windy!
Glad to have been of service, OZ. 😎
Crikey!
Thanks for posting this for me!
Sunset tonight was incredible. It must be something in the air….
It’s a SUPERMOON tonight. Big and beautiful. Thought I’d hear OZ howling…. 🙂
Jan – You did.

As a matter of the most casual interest, can anyone explain why ‘Wolf Moon’ keeps reappearing in the ‘Top Posts’ slot? Not that I’m complaining, but I wrote the thing back in the middle of January.

Number of comments and views?
Because we receive 5-10 ‘hits’ a day from the WordPress search engine by people inquiring about ‘wolf moon’ ‘wolf howling at moon’ (those were just today) and so forth.

Furry ’nuff. Just curious. 🙂
