Sunny Sunday afternoon by the Thames

After a pretty wet week, it was a pleasant change to have a crisp, but sunny day, so we took a stroll by the river.  It was crowded on the bank but nothing much moving on the river, which was hardly surprising; there are cautions in force at the moment for boats.

“Molly” and crew ignored this ( they usually do! ) but they were the only boat to use the lock while we were there.

  1. Minty problem is after the pub and all that running water…… need I say more.

I love the Thames at this point, it is really beautiful.

Indeed, Rick and especially on a cold day!

Yes, it is very beautiful, if a little manicured.

  3. Oops, just checked and my photos are slightly oversize; pure laziness on my part, I didn’t have time to reduce them accurately.

    Sorry! 😦

  4. Thank you, Jan.

Here’s photo, not mine, of “Molly” under sail. Not quite such hard work, weather permitting! She is a Whaler.

  5. OK, Bearsy.

Thank you. I don’t normally add to the Media Library but as you, or Boadicea, pointed out, it’s not possible to do a slide show in any other way.

  6. Beautiful photos, Araminta.

Can you send a bit of blue sky here, please? Week after week of heavy dark clouds and rain is getting dreadfully tedious! We had over 7 inches of rain yesterday and it’s still coming down…

  7. Thank you, Boadicea.

I wish I could, but today has been dull and overcast with a bitter wind.

I have been keeping up to date with your floods; sad to hear four people died. I do hope it doesn’t continue, but it sounds as though it isn’t going to improve much.

  8. Yep, nice shots Ara! It was about this time every year that I and my brother used to pass through Henley on our way to Ewelme village to visit my Aunt on the occasion of her birthday. In her eighties she would enjoy a walk along the River at Henley as a bit of a treat. I can remember complaining about the plastic knives and forks at the large pub on the bridge, saying that my aunt was arthritic and could only use steel. It worked anyway. Other times we would picnic on the river bank at Wallingford. My aunt told us (her nephews) that as a child, the boats or barges chugging along would throw coppers to kids on the river bank, well I suppose to those kids who looked needy and waved a cheery hello! Good old days indeed.

  9. Hello PapaG.

    Thank you.

Lovely memories. The Angel on the Bridge is probably where your aunt has the plastic knives and forks experience. They only serve drinks in plastic glasses too, if you are outside. Popular place though in summer, because you are right on the water. It’s great for boat watching!

There are other ways. I did this before Bearsy & Boa kindly invested some considerable time and effort instructing us in the correct use of WordPress.

P.S. Nice pic’s by the way.

  11. Hello Toc.

Thank you for the PS, much appreciated.

I am unaware that it is possible to do slide shows without loading the photos into the Media Library on this site, but I could be wrong.

Normally, if I publish photos on this site, I just link them from my own WordPress site; I just find it easier, and they don’t take up any room here, or that is my understanding.

  12. Yes, Araminta you are right.

Only single pictures can be posted from another site to show here, although if they are ridiculously large they will still take time to appear and will make the site ‘appear’ to be slow.

I’ve experimented with trying to do the same with pictures in a slide shows – and that simply doesn’t seem possible.

Hopefully WordPress will remedy this lack at some time!

  13. Thank you, Boadicea.

I’m sure you or Bearsy would have mentioned the fact that WordPress had improved this facility.
I appreciate that linking large files is not good news, though.

  14. Araminta,

Some time ago, Bearsy pushed me very hard into getting to grips with the size of pic’s. To cut a long story short I found I was able to re-size on my PC and export into my download file. All I did then was to insert images in my post and I was then offered the option of creating a slide show. Now that I know about the media library there is no need to use that method.

  15. Araminta,

As you can see, I did it and I know that I would have been jumped on from a great height if I had done the wrong thing and then pointed with great kindness in the right direction. I have in fact done it several times but have long since deleted those posts.

  16. Toc.

Yes, we can all learn, and once one knows how to do it, if pointed in the right direction, it all becomes incredibly easy, I agree.

  17. P.S. Just a thought, doing what I did, the pic’s would have automatically been added to the media library and I wouldn’t have know that at that time?

  18. To clarify, Toc, there are a number of ways one can post single pictures in posts or comments, but if you use the slideshow facility, your photos are included in the Media Library here, whether you realise it or not.

As Boadicea has pointed out, it is not possible at the moment, to do it any other way.

  19. Correct (of course, Araminta 🙂 ) – your Zulu pictures are in the media library, Toc, and yes, unfortunately they do have to be there for a slideshow. You’re very good at making them an appropriate size Toc, thanks. 🙂

  20. Bearsy,

Until you put up your tutorials, I didn’t even know about the media library. As I said to Araminta, I did it all directly into my post. All is clear now. 🙂

  21. I know you do, Araminta. It is always a delight to converse technically with you because you’re either there already, or you catch up with gratifying alacrity. 😀

  22. Thank you, Val. 🙂

    Hi Christopher.

Yes, I agree with you, Henley and surrounding areas are very “English”, but then there are many parts of the country that are equally lovely, thank goodness!

  23. Lovely Araminta, thanks! So you can row or sail!! I’ve done a bit of sailing in the dim and distance past – mirrors and lasers.
