? for Zen

Today’s crossword, 4 down, the clue is “Check about special synthetic substance”. The answer is clearly ‘Resin’, but resin is not synthetic, but a natural substance. Am I wrong, somewhere?

  1. I would agree with you Tom, however, although the dictionary confirms this, it gives a second as a solid or liquid synthetic organic polymer used in plastics. Well wadda yer know.

Strictly speaking, resins are natural substances, not necessarily from plants, and synthetic resins have similar properties and are formed by polymerisation, e.g. epoxy resin. However, in common usage, resin is taken to be any type of resin, natural or otherwise
