  1. Hear, hear.

Nothing wrong with Green King Abbot, but my favourite is Shepherd Neame Bishop’s Finger, a.k.a. Nun’s Delight!

  2. I seem to remember that our hero had his less heroic moments? Lost the captaincy? Remind me. 🙂

  3. bravo22c :

Gud, du er en elendig gammel bastard. Jeg vil vædde folk gå ud af pubben, når du kommer ind.

You could be right Bravo. The man (not Two Face) was a great rugby hero/legend who gave everything for his country. England can always do with men of his caliber.

P.S. Is this translation near enough?

“God, you’re a miserable old bastard. I bet people go out of the pub when you arrive.” 🙂

  4. I’d be happy to have a drink in the pub with you, Janus, despite all those people rushing to the exit. 😉 Cheers!

  5. I don’t speak any of Bravo’s clutch of languages. Nor do I share his blind ‘old boy’ regard for ‘hard men’ whose behaviour is no better than it ought to be (Irish expression). It explains why I have never enjoyed pub culture. Bravo meanwhile has a very limited sense of humour – limited to his own lame attempts.

  6. PS, even though Google failed to help you the word for ‘bastard’ is usually ‘røvhul’.

  7. And i have no time for blowhards who fulminate about ‘commitment,’ and other socially desirable attributes as long as it fits their own narrow prejudices.

Do I have to list the juvenile, anti-social and downright criminal antics of the sorry parade of over-paid, under-committed prima-donna kissballer players who grace the pages of our national press on a ergular basis to make my point?

    Janus :

It explains why I have never enjoyed pub culture.

Why am I not in the least surprised.

  8. So drug abuse is is now only critcised by people with ‘narrow prejudices’? You’re just the type I’d want in charge of my security.

  9. Janus :

You twist the meaning to score a debating point. I repeat. Blowhard.

    Janus :

The first sensible comment you’ve made for a long while – when I’m in charge, it works. If that were not so, I’d never get another contract. Reputation is not in your vocabulary, perhaps.

  10. Toc, yes – The theme of this thread is a ‘rôle model whose credentials I dared to question. That’s called ‘twisting the meaning to score adebating point’, apparently. I still maintain anyone who condones drug-taking as criticises by people with ‘narrow prejudices’ is hardly worthy to look after security. Obviously old soldiers never die, they just blow harder.

Btw, please note where the first ad hominem came from.

I noted it. It seems some ad hominem’s are more equal than others, Janus. Interesting.

JW, this is not our first spat. See #23

See Janus, you are at it again. What right have you got to question the morals or the work ethic of another site member just because he happened to to be a member of the Armed Forces in another life? You have a problem with “Old Soldiers” as you dismissively like to call them. You have carried your prejudices across from MyT to this site!

Like it or lump it Janus, “Old Soldiers” have a bond, something I doubt you will ever understand but are in all probability are very jealous of? They did serve their country and gave something back to it at some considerable risk!

I find it very strange that you put up a post about the Poppy Banner on this site and another about war poetry and then go on to lump “Old Soldiers” together as “blow harder types”. Perhaps it has something to do with your choice of avatar?

If I can make a suggestion, take the time to read this:-

    http://bearsy.wordpress.com/2010/11/07/one-of-our-memories-is-missing-by-nokamis/

It may give you a little insight into “Old Soldiers?”

  13. Toc, I’m sure many of you old soldiers earned and now deserve respect.

It’s you who are mixing things up. When old soldiers come up with crap ideas, they deserve the same treatment as everyone else. My quotation about old soldiers is aimed at this blogger because he likes to blow hard himself on many subjects – never much interested in comments which disagree with him.

And I’m afraid you old soldiers don’t have the franchise on ‘Poppy Day’ or memories of wars past. Others have the right to comment on them without fear or favour. I don’t require you guidance or permission.

As for ‘jealousy’ of your soldiers’ bond – why on earth would I want it? Do you imagine I don’t have bonds which mean just as much?

I don’t criticise this blogger ‘BECAUSE’ he is an old soldier! I do it BECAUSE he idolises a man who was proved to have involved himself in a national scandal about drug abuse! I consider that is poor behaviour for a security expert. My opinion. Not deserving of ad hominem responses.

    Janus,

    (My bold)

Perhaps it is best not to go down that route of memories of wars past? I seem to remember that you have been there before elsewhere.

When you write something like that, I have serious doubts that you know anything about ad hominem. As someone pointed out, there are degrees. You were out of order and that is why you were moderated.

I don’t understand you at all, you litter the posts of others with bizarre and at time offensive comments. If I can take you back in time, here is an example of just what I’m talking about:-

    Dear Mr Tocino,
If you are a well-known MyT person, why hide?

    Are you

    1. a troll?

2. a plonker?

    Janus,

Have ever said I was a well known MyT personality?

Have I written anything here to suggest I’m a troll?

Is there any reason to suggest that I’m a plonker?

I find your questions out of order on what has been to date a rather humorous blog.

That of course was penned by you not long after I had joined this site and sums you up to a tee!

  15. Janus, as a matter of interest, why are you so anti those who have served in the Forces, or have done something worthwhile for their country? Your attitude smacks of a past hurt or rejection.
Behaving like a disappointed and spoilt child will impress no one.

  16. I do it BECAUSE he idolises a man who was proved to have involved himself in a national scandal about drug abuse! I consider that is poor behaviour for a security expert. My opinion. Not deserving of ad hominem responses.

That explains. precisely, my discontent. Everyone else picked up the prominent pint of bitter in the pic and the reference in the post to ‘wussy lager.’ That’s it. Hence the reference to narrow, bigotted views that you can’t help parading whenever you want to have a pop.

Imagine my disappointment that there will be no further comments on my posts from the direction of Denmark.

I think I’ll let the good Doctor have the last word, ‘Every man thinks meanly of himself for not having been a soldier, or not having been at sea.’ (Ferret, I’m sure old Sam would have included the Royal Air Force had it been in existence at the time.)

  17. Adam Garrie abandoned the Chariot because of Janus’ continual sniping. So did our friend from the ‘gong (‘Indoles Simulatio’, or ‘Luke’, or ‘Dr Lao’). So did I.

Boadicea is a gentle soul who likes to give people enough rope to hang themselves, and she is understandably, if mistakenly, concerned that The Chariot might fade to black were she to ban Janus.

However, I can hardly fail to observe from our liaisons on the smoking terrace that she is becoming increasingly irritated by these events, and should they continue I can foresee Boadicea flipping into her ‘slighted academic’ mode, where the collateral death and destruction far outweighs anything ever perpetrated by her avatarian rôle-model.
