Yesterday I wrote about a baby elephant who was saved by his herd when attacked by a crocodile.
Here’s today’s headline from my local newspaper.

Addo of course is just up the road from here (less than an hours drive), it’s a magnificent National Park and has spawned dozens of private game reserves, guesthouses, restaurants etc. on it’s boundaries.
You have to respect where you are, this chap was 30, should have known better.
You are right Soutie, respect at all times with these animals.
This is a Darwin thing, nature predating on the weak and/or stupid.
Crikey.
What did he think he was doing?!
What a great shame that the lions were shot though. Surely a tranquillizer would have been sufficient to safely get the body?
A Darwin Awrd contender.
Pseu, it’s pretty standard practice to shoot any animal that has gored, trampled or, as in this case eaten a human be at a lion, elephant, buffalo whatever.
Can’t have them roaming around thinking that we are simply toys or another meal. Unfortunate I know but that’s how it has always been with ‘rogue’ animals or ‘maneaters.’
Thanks for including the link, Soutie. It’s interesting to note that most of the comments are sadness at the death of three young lions. This idiot drunk could have walked in front of a bus had he been in a city, and no one would have shot the bus!
It was also interesting to note some racism in one or two of the comments. I assumed from the name of the deceased that he was of Boer origin. Would I be right? So there was no need for silly remarks about the lions being trained to attack coloured people.
Howzit Bravo, I thought of you with your ‘gene pool’ comment as I was posting this 🙂
Cheech has published this years Darwin awards, number 5 is a beaut.
Hi Soutie. They’re all over the place. Thia happened while I was in Serbia:
>A 23-year old Serb was found dead and half-eaten in the bear cage of Belgrade Zoo at the weekend during the annual beer festival.
The man was found naked, with his clothes lying intact inside the cage.
Two adult bears, Masha and Misha, had dragged the body to their feeding corner and reacted angrily when keepers tried to recover it.
“There’s a good chance he was drunk or drugged. Only an idiot would jump into the bear cage,” zoo director Vuk Bojovic said.
Local media reported that police found several mobile phones inside the cage, as well as bricks, stones and beer cans.
Hello Sheona.
I had no idea what you were on about, what ‘racist comments’ I thought, I went and had a second look and only then realised that you were referring to the comments by readers at the bottom.
Ja well, as with comments I see on other newspapers, it takes all sorts, not even we are immune to them 😉
I rather fancy shooting buses.
Definitely preferable to lions.
I feel such lionlike behaviour should be positively encouraged as elemental population control.
I suppose there will always be idiots who think they can ‘play’ with wild animals and get away with it. A Macho Moment that ended in disaster – for both the human and the lions.
“Can’t have them roaming around thinking that we are simply toys or another meal. Unfortunate I know but that’s how it has always been with ‘rogue’ animals or ‘maneaters.’”
I agree but these are not wild animals in their own environment Soutie. They should be protected from drunken idiots taunting them.
There were fences, I understand and I think it appalling that they were shot.
Man needs a natural predator, we’re getting above ourselves.
Speak for yourself, Jazz. 😉
Maybe I should have said Mankind.
Apologies, Soutie, for not making myself clear. I always find it interesting to read the readers’ comments in foreign newspapers.
Jazz. See if you still say that next time you get a cold 😀
