  1. Hmm! I thought people might prefer a “Visual Aid” rather than one of my turgid explanations! I don’t do battles terrible well! It’s a pretty good analysis of what happened: although really it all boils down to the fact that the English beat the French, against huge odds, – yet again!

The best I can do for the ‘tennis balls’ is to say that they were probably a probably a figment of Shakespeare’s imagination as were his ‘reported’ speeches.

The matter was a deal more serious than a few tennis balls – Henry wanted the crown of France. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, it was also a case of โ€˜when thereโ€™s trouble at home, start a foreign war.โ€™ It usually worked.

Exactly, Zen – see my ‘Also today’!

  3. Janus, were you pushed or did you jump?

P.S. I read somewhere that there are twice as many pigs in Denmark than people. Is this true?

  4. Beat me to it, Boa. ๐Ÿ™‚

btw. Lack of historical detail in the clip. The archers are using normal, broad-pointed arrows when in real life they almost certainly used ‘bodkin points,’ chisel-shaped arrow heads used to, (they hoped,) penetrate armour.

Anyhoo, it’s one of the great speeches from English Literature – even if it was a bit of artistic licence ๐Ÿ™‚ Makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up – and Branagh does it very well.

  5. Well, we’ll have to agree to disagree on that one, Zen. I must have been about twelve when I saw Larry’s version at the flicks and I’ll be forever grateful ‘cos that’s what fired up my love for the Bard. Still think Branagh’s version is better ๐Ÿ™‚

Pushed whither, pray? And no, we don’t have a Michael Caine here to help.:-)

  7. I prefer the Branagh version too.
I was rather chuffed to see two of my relatives in the lists of Agincourt’s fighters recently published. Nothing like a good go at the frogs!

It is said that there are ten times the number of sheep more than people in Wales, whether that is true I have no idea but it looks that way especially inland from the populated coastal regions.

  8. Tina, wow, six degrees ๐Ÿ™‚ – your relatives were at Agincourt, we know you, so now we’re all connected to Henry V ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. If it’s anything like the Pronce of Wales on the corner of West Street, I’ll give it a miss ๐Ÿ™‚ (Used to be a decent boozer, too.)

  10. Branagh’s effort might be more ‘accessible’ to modern viewers, which is no bad thing, but Olivier does it for me.

    OZ

  11. Olivier does it for me too. As one of the comments under the Olivier clip says, Olivier sounds like a king!

Back to the detail. Thanks for the information, Bravo. There were a couple of clips to choose from. This one looked better – the other one had the archers stopping to look where their arrows went! I thought the whole point of using longbows (apart from the fact that archers didn’t cost much to hire!) was that they kept the sky ‘dark’ with their arrows.
