All the family back under one roof. That’s the way I like it.
Scout has just returned from a week in Cornwall, camping, damply, with the Scouts. Must’ve been good growing weather. All his kit smells rather earthy, so I reckon he slept in a grow bag, not a sleeping bag.
My position as shortest in the family has been fully asserted.
He has come back a little more grown up in other respects too. Firstly, sporting a mock Cornish accent that a group of them cultivated while they were there (I wonder how long that will last?) secondly having been ‘one of the grown-ups’ for teh week, in organising the younger Scouts, as he is now an ‘explorer’, and thirdly, having been accused of shop-lifting in a small shop a few days ago.
“We have CCTV footage you know,” said the woman.
“That’s fine,” is how he he reports his response, “because I haven’t taken anything.”
He had to stand by while she watched the footage to check his actions. And no he hadn’t taken anything. Even so, no apology from the shop keeper, just a glare as he left the shop.
Now, I know that probably shop keepers lose a great deal from kids shop-lifting and up to that point I can understand why she may be suspicious of a boy coming into a shop with two friends, rather scruffy from camping and joshing about a little knowing them.
But no apology?
Even after she had seen his innocence for herself on the CCTV camera.
Disgusting.
Now he’s back, the sun is out!
Camping is character building, but he’ll grow out of it.
That lady needs to learn some manners – nice example for your boy, Pseu.
I used to do that – adopt the accent of wherever I’d been on holiday as a teenager. The linguistic name is ‘convergence’, I think, when your intonation and pronunciation etc moves closer to what you hear..
That woman sounds very annoying. She ought to remember that stereotypes are just that…
Yup!
The accent is fading…
Glad to hear it!
If I knew the name of the shop I’d be on the phone… but I don’t . Scout has ‘forgotten it’ – he hates it when I make a fuss. 🙂
Pseu, good evening. Sounds like ‘The Winslow Boy’ updated. The best part for me is that Scout told you the story himself since he clearly knew that he was as innocent as any Perry Mason client. More power to his woggle!
Power to the woggle indeed.
We have now dried the tent and folded it up on the lawn this afternoon, before it rained again this evening.
