  1. Smashing pictures. Love the second, ears pricked, wonderful intelligent head. (The carpet is a nice backdrop to his stance!) He has come on a bundle and looking more disciplined.

  2. Friend came round with his 16 month old black retriever bitch the other day, which is in training to be a gundog. All went well with her obediently sitting, lying down, coming to heel, staying on command when a rabbit was scented, so he let her run, when we reached the pond garden. She belted off one way round the pond; we went round the other way. Loud panic-stricken squawking preceded a bunch of the neighbour’s trespassing chickens, hurtling up the bank towards us, with retriever in hot pursuit. Spotting us, she retreated, and the chickens fled back into the neighbour’s garden, past us. There was a moment or two of silence, followed by more frenzied squawking, which stopped suddenly, and then loud splashing noises from beyond the reeds. By the time we had reached the water’s edge, it was to see retriever paddling confidently across the pond bearing the gift of a terrified and drenched chicken in its mouth, which with some reluctance she was persuaded to drop at her master’s feet. It lay there, apparently dead, and we were debating whether he should take it home and cook it, or report its death to the neighbours. Then I noticed an eye moving – it was paralysed with fright, as if it understood the conversation going on about its fate. A gentle lob across the hedge into the neighbour’s field restored the trespasser to its own territory. I hope the flock have learnt some lessons on the fate awaiting trespassers in this neck of the woods, and I am thinking of inviting my friend to carry out water trials regularly and frequently in my pond, just in case they are too bird-brained to have taken the lesson aboard…

  3. Hi Tom. Frenchie 2 is growing fast, and by the looks of it, he’s gonna be a smasher. Oh so bootiful.
    CWJ, great story, loved it.

  4. Hello Tom, I have not been round for a good while, so didn’t know about Frenchie Mark 2 – he looks lovely. I hope you are well?
