What next?

Well then, what’s going to happen to the magnificent stadiums now that the world cup is finished?

Ours has been designated the home of Eastern Province Rugby! We had our first home game last Friday and although the crowd was disappointing (FIFA hangover perhaps) it is the start of something big.

Our stadium during the final phase of construction

But there’s more,  last week it was announced that the Super14 is to be expanded to a Super16 format and that our Province is a shoe in for the 16th place. Oh, to be able to watch The Crusaders,  Reds, Chiefs, Bulls, Brumbies et al performing here in my home town.

But I digress.

Soccer City

The home Tri-nations test match against the All Blacks scheduled for 21st August is to be played at Soccer City Soweto. Now renamed ‘The National Stadium’ (a name which will never catch on, this venue was Soccer City 20 years ago and will be soccer City 20 years hence.) It’s a ‘sell out’, iafrica report that all 88,791 seats are sold!

That’s a lot of people (and a lot of money) for a Rugby Test, power to their collective elbows.

I understand that the vuvuzela has been banned from Rugby Tests, we’ll see!

  1. Interesting Soutie.

I did wonder what happens next. I hope that these facilities will be utilised and there will be some serious consideration that it was not just a one off.

I think it has put South Africa on the sporting map, and I dare say that it didn’t do much harm to tourism.

    Great stuff.

  2. Too true Jan, we were just today discussing which CLT20 (Champions League Twenty20) to go to during September!

It’s a competition pitting the best twenty20 teams from around the world against each other.

    3 teams from India, S.A. (2), England(2), Oz(2) and 1 each from W.Indies, Sri Lanka & N.Z.

  3. Evening Ara & JW, Ours was always earmarked as a rugby stadium, there is no professional football down here, only rugby could possibly sustain it.

Ara the publicity that this country got as a destination for either tourism or investment has been quoted in the billions of dollars, the sort of PR that money can’t buy! 😉
