More than a Toy Story

So far I’ve seen Toy Story 3 twice and will try and tag along when my sister’s family decides to see it. Without sounding over the top I have to say this film is absolutely flawless. Four years in the making, Pixar refused to make a cash in quick follow up to Toy Story 2 (a film sequel better than the original, IMO); they’ve created a masterpiece.

A whole host of new toys are introduced alongside the trusted and loveable regular cast. You’ll recognise some of your old playthings here. For instance, there’s a Fisher Price phone pull toy and in a non-speaking, muted musical part, a kids xylophone.

Storyline is everything to Pixar and they have abided by the scriptwriters’ maxim: it’s the script, stupid. Homage to many classic films are paid, Cool Hand Luke for one. The scenes with Ken and Barbie are hilarious and the various escapades and chases are edge of the seat stuff.

Animated movies are not just for children and where Toy Story 3 is at its most effective is in its sentimentality. The nothing lasts forever adage runs right through the film. Entertaining, amusing with many emotional episodes, and yes I cried at the end…but I wasn’t the only one.

  1. Did you, JW? Aww. A manly sniffle I hope, not Gazza-style gusher-blubbing. Film sounds excellent. We’re seeing it on Sunday. It’s a pretty tricky act to pull off, an animation that’s enthralls, thrills, delights and moves both adults and children.

  2. These kiddie-flicks don’t do it for me, I’m afraid. Too sentimental by half, with silly voices. Sorry.

First time, it was Gazza-style, second time, manly sniffle. I’m sure you will enjoy this, you’ll be splitting your sides one moment and blubbing the next. Take plenty of hankies.

Cartoon films aren’t to everybody’s taste. However, if you approach the movie with wondrous excitement and anticipation in your heart, you’ll be entertained. The Toy Story franchise is the Godfather of animated films.
