Just to remind you that you’ve got until midnight tomorrow BST (and relevant variations thereof) to be in it to win it.
So far, I believe that we only have five contenders. That’ll be my fault then and the whole competition is probably doomed, which, being a Jock, cheers me up a wee bit.
The roll call is, as far as I can determine and in order of insertion:-
Sipu (Have a good journey tomorrow. Safe oot and safe hame)

Rules:
1,000 words or less on an interaction of any sort between two or more well known fictional characters who were created by different authors.
Whatever format you choose to choose.
Deadline midnight GMT (01.00 am BST on the day immediately following the specified day and all and/or any other time zones pari passu) on 21st July 2010.
Now, I’m bowling in the League match tomorrow night. We are bottom of the League and hanging on by a thread. I won’t be home until after midnight (BST) and I won’t be looking at the entries then because I will probably be ‘in a very bad mood’ as a certain Vogon captain might say.
I’ll try to get a decision out by the weekend. Good as all the entries are, it would be nice to have a few more to pick from.
This is a male dominated thingie. So far I am the only female.
Oh dear, I must confess I am having a problem with the theme, John, but I will manage something hopefully before the deadline.
Thanks for the guilt trip. (smiley thing)
Pseu, hi. I have my theories about that.
Boa and JamieT are too busy. CO is never going to enter on a point of principle, let alone tell me the tale of the Falls Road with which I continually ask her to regale us, I have a slight feeling that Ara might still be cobbling a pome away (I do hope so). Janh1 may not not entering because she thinks that I will just criticise her spelling – she’s Welsh, you know?
Bilby is obviously too disraught about Ethel to concentrate. Sheona, marinaid, Shermeen, Deborah, Cornish/Oggy Kate, Isobel (and Kat), sq, and Mary Contrary, are, I hope, still visiting but not contributing too much at the moment. I trust and hope that that may change in the future.
So, that leaves Valzone whose pictures we all enjoy so much and who can clearly write well, but it may just not be her thing.
And Claire, of course, who should be back here contributing and entering, in my opinion.
Smiley things to the max to any of the female persuasion hereon who I might have unintentionally offended. Except Janh1 who was being joshed by a fellow Celt as always.
Major and personal smiley thing to her.
Ara, good evening and thank you.
That’ll be the Highland granny then. I’ve been crafting my last comment for a wee while, but I did have the sensation that there was literary activity afoot in Henley.
Please tell Bilby to get her finger out and that I’ll accept Greyfriars Bobby as a fictional character (as portrayed in Hollywood) if it would help.
Strange you should say that, John. I probably should do a pome, but I thought I’d try prose this time; hence my problem. We have already had some really good, or do I mean “bad” poetry, which to be honest, I do prefer!
I’ll sort it out, I hope, but as you can see, I’m really having a problem stringing a sentence together.
Excuses excuses, I know!
Pseu – I am still looking forward to Miss Polly Pt. II before the deadline.
Araminta – I was always told that those with with bumps in their cardies were ace at multi-tasking and suchlike. So, as soon as you’ve finished the washing, gardening, cleaning, school runs, cooking and ironing will you just get a grip and sort yourself. You have fifteen and a half hours left.
OZ
Yes Sir!!! Oz.
School run? Thankfully now you have Eff, we are spared that particular chore. We are considering having her “finished”, but she’s not too keen on that idea.
Silly minx seems to prefer Portugal to Switzerland. 😉
There have been moments when I’ve considered having her finished too, believe me. I have a mahoosive rosemary bush in the garden and loads of garlic and olive oil and Dobbin was not the only warm-blooded thing around here. Just stop prevaricating and write something – preferably about a loving reunion in October.
OZ
Aha, Great Expectations, perhaps? 😉
Wrong Dickens tome, a mon avis, Ara.
Think ‘David Copperfield’ and the great Wilkins Micawber.
‘Something will turn up’. And it’ll probably be Eff.
I do believe part two will not emerge until too late.
Hedging, weeding, supervising cookery (Scout and Techie Adviser cooking a meal each this week) washing, ironing, sewing, reading. etc. etc. Oh and work. Mustn’t forget work.
(A woman’s work and al that guff….)
At least the grass hasn’t grown so I shall not have to cut that as well.
Oh, and defrosting the freezer before the big delivery on Thursday…. how I hate that job.
Oh no, John! betraying the memory of that small, loyal, gallant dog is a step too far.
I would dearly love to write a short story, but my last effort was in my eleventh year (at the height of my literary skills) and I have never looked forward! 😉
It’s not as though I haven’t thought about it because I have (and all the others!), but my ideas haven’t translated to print. Very interesting comp, but quite difficult actually.
Rather liked the first deadline, but it probably wouldn’t have made a difference in my case. Sorry, but my dreadful guilt isn’t likely to produce a story in time.
Bilby, never mind. We’ll always have Embra.
Embra Forever. 🙂
JM – Is a ‘tome’ the literary equivalent of a ‘pome’ and should I be very afraid?
OZ
Mr Mackie you know I positively welcome your instructive pedantry and I can take any amount of joshing a) because I’m Welsh and b) because I’m still completely chilled from hols.
As for the comp, I only have the sketchiest of purile ideas which probably won’t come to much because I have work tomorrow and before than I have to cycle and go get my exciting underwater pics from Boots. (Don’t hold your breath. I’m confidently expecting mostly rocks.)
Maybe Eff will attend the World Lacrosse Punchup in Manchester, out of sympathy for the absent Iroquois squad, barred from the UK for trying to use Native American documents.
Just wondered. 🙂
JM, since you yourself have shortened the deadline, why don’t you do a volte-face (or a Maggie) and reinstate the August date? Then the ladies will have no excuse and they’ll even have time to wash their hair too.
Will you just pack it in, Janus? It’s the hair-straightening that takes the time. 😀
Ha! A likely story. It’s the mirror that takes the time.
OK. I can’t find the original posting for the competition so I’m putting the link here: http://bearsy.wordpress.com/2010/07/21/writing-competition-entry/#comment-26770
And John, speaking of pedantry, it’s J-A-I-M-E. The Spanish spelling of a male name. Last name begins with an R, also a Spanish surname, which doesn’t explain why I can’t speak Spanish, but that’s characteristic of us third-generation hybrids.
Ring out the bells and celebrate.
Where once was five, we now have eight.
The ladies multi-tasked sublimely,
And all their entries are more than timely.
So thanks to Janus for all his winds up.
It clearly made the ladies’ minds up.
They grabbed their pens and wrote with ardour,
To make my job just that much harder.
I wait the deadline with every pore,
To see if eight’s the final score.
You’ve still got time to write the winner.
Decision tomorrow, after dinner.
My breath is bated once again
Until tomorrow evening – then
I’ll read your critical review
And so will seven others too. 🙂
There is still time for Tina’s post,
Should one appear I’ll raise a toast.
She has at times been fairly near,
Just terror makes her quake with fear.
Her reputation is at stake,
Her street cred, oh for goodness sake,
Methinks she does protest too oft
In case we think she’s going soft.
Naeh, Tina would, except her creed
Prevents her publishing her screed.
Our writing club and sim’lar larks
Invoke her oath to Grouch Marx;
From whom she learned her specialty –
Her pure unclubability.
Nice one Janus. 🙂
Sorry to the Magnificent Eight.
Last night’s bowls league match rained off. Phone call at work to say it had been re-arranged for tonight as the only possible time.
So nae dinner, nae judging and dashing out the door to the game. Will try to get the verdict out tonight but I can’t promise it, particularly if there is a miracle and we win.
I’m sure it will wait, John! Good luck re the bowls.
Go Geddem JM,
Take no prisoners. 🙂
