I found some old photos, all in pretty poor condition, and I’m doing what I can to recover them. This was one of them. I have no idea where this is, except central Nairobi somewhere. Recognise the building on the left, rear, Zen?
Use photo shop or Picassa to touch up the photos, I used used photoshop some years ago with soem old prewar photos.
Rick, I have the tools and filters, but they’re in pretty bad condition, took ages to get this far 😦
The photos, I meant, not the tools 🙂
oops try this
I know what you mean, some of our old ones were torn as well.
You need a little color correction on that, in Photoshop there is an autocorrex for color under Image>Auto Color. It will take out the red cast. On the other hand, you might want that red which kind of dates it, gives it that 50s look.
Regardless of the condition Bravo, it is lovely. Post some more, I enjoy all this stuff. Tell some more stories too.
Hell’s bells, Bravo, what a challenge! I reconise the Tailor’s sign, but what street? I am probably wrong, but I think the large white building is the backside of the New Stanley Hotel, and the photograph is taken in Government Road.
If I am right, the statue of Lord Delamere is ahead of us, with Torrs Hotel on the other side of the road, opposite to Woolworths. In 1952 I stood there and watched the new Queen and Phil the Greek being driven to the airport on the death of George VI. They had been staying at Treetops, watching wild game, when the news arrived.
Zen, I think you’ve nailed it. That also, possibly, puts a time to it, as well – if I’m right, it was taken just after the Christmas holiday when we had been into Woolworths to buy a film for my new camera. Remember the Thorn Tree Cafe in the New Stanley? Again, if I’m right, we walked on down there and my sister – 5 at the time – had an ice cream sundae. When it was delivered, it was in a glass so tall that she could not get her mouth to the straw from her seat – had to stand on her chair to drink it 🙂
I like it when a good plan comes together!
JDimbleby featured the bar in his recent series on Africa – it looks as it was.
