What many don’t realise is that the first musical act from outside of Africa to record with South African musicians were Manfred Mann’s Earth Band–they did it several years before Simon, who rather liked the idea. Manfred Mann were past their zenith in 83, but still made a rather good swan song.

  2. Interesting too, just a year after they recorded illegally with black musicians in South Africa they became one of the first ‘western’ bands to play east of the Iron Curtain as shown above in Budapest. Their earlier work was truly brilliant.

  3. I know you are mostly interested in music from ex-English Africa, but I love the singing of Salif Keita and most of the Mali singers. Here is the golden voice of Africa…
