DEMOCRATIC POLL: ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go’?

I'm a man of substance, debates concerning style bore me to death.
 Since debates on
style vis-a-vis substance seem to prevail in this place,
at present--I thought I'd settle things once and for all in a free,
fair and democratic fashion.
Therefore I'm giving everyone a chance to vote in this poll.
You may use the comment boxes to make speeches in favour or
against one of the two positions. Polls close at midnight GMT.
Long live the classic in-or-out referendum!

  1. Aye weel Adam, this one is going to end in tears, in my opinion. for what it’s worth, I think that you should stay if you want to.

Not, of course, that the decision is solely in your hands. The Bearsy gaveth and the Bearsy can surely taketh away. But I don’t see any evidence of you breaking any of the rules of the site even if some of the other authors feel it necessary to attack you for your literary style and not for your content.

We all still have the same right here as we had on MyT not to read stuff. Personally, I don’t really see the need to comment on stuff that we don’t enjoy just to advise the breathless, waiting world that we didn’t enjoy it. Leads to mass attacks by others concurring or demurring and, as I say, inevitably ends in tears, in my experience.

  2. If you can separate the substance from the style, then I would agree, JM.

As for the poll, stay or go, but take what you get in the same way as everyone else.

  3. I say yes, but with the proviso that you are FAR less garrulous!

  4. That’s just the thing though–I’m really not bothered one way or another. If people like Janus think the place is better without me–he was here first so perhaps he has more of an inflated vote in that sense–perhaps Bravo too. Anyway–I’ll abide by the decision of the referendum as I always am for referenda.

  5. Adam, I’ve voted yes. I don’t have a problem with your writing style, but since I seem to be incapable of writing anything much longer than my weekly shopping list, I do not consider myself to be in a position to criticise others.

At least your posts are original and not just unattributed cut and paste, as seems to be the case with some posts regularly appearing on the pages of MyT. Dreadful habit, but then having seen some of their original efforts, I think I understand why they resort to this. They are basically illiterate.

  6. Adam, as with everything else on this site what you do is your decision.

    I haven’t voted and don’t intend to.

  7. Adam,

I voted yes but you must stop this navel gazing. It does not become you.

If Hugh Janus doesn’t like your style, he has the option to ignore it. Length of time spent here means nothing, every blogger has the right to post whatever they wish as long as they abide by the more than reasonable site rules. Seemples

  8. Adam, I don’t mind either way, but, before you go, could you explain to me the various nuances of the phrase ‘closed minded pig man’?

  9. Interesting opinions everyone. Unlike in politics where I’ve got firm empirically based convictions, I’m rather flexible about other things, hence why I’ve chosen a democratic method to decide for me. Makes the decision easier on all of us, I should think.

  10. helpmaboab,
I assume the phrase implies a swine of some kind whose less willing to bathe in mud in the other side of the pen than the other. What many don’t realise is that pigs are amongst the most intelligent livestock and are frequently used in various laboratory experiments for this reason…that and the animentalists are less fond of them than monkeys.

  11. I said stay, but if you want to go it is a free world.

It takes all types to make a site interesting, the thought of us all agreeing and no arguments is boring and mind numbingly dull.

But stop acting like a spoilt child and make up your mind.

  12. No one said it was Bearsy–but this singular blog of mine and the decision I shall make, I indent to conduct democratically.
    Rick,
I don’t see how being democratic is being a spoilt child. Indecisive, yes–that’s what I am, but not really spoilt I should think.

  13. Thanks for that Adam, someone used that expression of me the other day, but your explanation doesn’t really explain why.

  14. Bearsy,
That is genius! If only I knew how stimulating my ‘umble words were going to be, I’d have said what I really meant, much sooner.

  15. The yes vote seems to be weakening. I’m concerned that Adam hasn’t written much more on this topic.

  16. Janus,
I’ve not much more to say, really. If you’ve any specific questions I shall labour my best to provide a satisfactory answer.

  17. I’m almost fully ‘otherwise occupied’ at the moment, so am not getting much chance to comment or post. I’m looking forward to some debates here when I get back to Oz… The more the merrier, say I! 🙂

  18. “The more the merrier”, says Boa, and I agree! I vote “yes”!

My vote carries no weight at all, as I rarely comment or blog these days, but as a member and (quiet) supporter of this site, I thought I would have my say anyway.

  19. I try–I’ve just seen that ‘featured author’ section, a bit over the top, that. Hopefully that will be removed after the election in an hour.

  20. Hello Ara. Ever the sweet tempered one, pouring oil.
I’m serious – there’s many a time you’ve popped in with a kind word for me after arguments on MyT.
Congrats on being featured author Adam. 🙂

  21. It is what I do Claire, I am rarely unpleasant despite my bad press, but just occasionally I have the odd rant, or become impossibly patronising; or so I am told.

  22. Ok, well here’s where I come up with all the cliches; ray of sunshine, breath of fresh air…
But it’s true. I remember some God awful spat I had on MyT a couple of months ago and you were lovely in defending me!

  23. You are too kind Claire, but I hate to see people being hounded or abused without just cause. I have a bit of an overdeveloped sense of fairness, especially where MyT is concerned and people I like.

  24. Well, thanks, for your interventions in my case at least. My T did get very vitriolic in the last days of the old site. I’d do the same for you you know 🙂

  25. Haw Adam, pal, get a grip. One has been privileged to be Featured Author hereon in one’s time. Not in the slightest OTT and possibly, although I wouldn’t dream of second-guessing Bearsy, a gentle josh. Nice to see it back as a feature.

‘Vote early and vote often’ works for me and maybe for hmb, ‘if he was here’, since I am sure that we both get the reference.

  26. I know what you mean, John–it’s just that I’m rather modest about things but hopefully the madness of the past few days will draw to a close in half an hour’s time.

  27. Thanks Ara. You always cheer me up.
Been a difficult one today. But Desperate HOusewives is on now, so I’m just going to watch the rest of it and pretend I’m Susan. Or Gabby. Or any one of them actually 🙂

  28. Right then–that’s it, the Ayes have it, but as a courtesy to the no votes, I’ll only contribute in this place, let’s say, thrice a week at most–something like that. Hope everyone is somewhat placated.

You have missed the point altogether. I don’t need to be ‘placated’ at all. My gadfly will probably buzz around you now and then.

  30. PS as a man of substance, you can start your own internet for unreadable ramblers.
