Val’s ‘Uninvited Guest’ post sent me scurrying to my ‘Eagle’ annuals. I was fairly sure that one of them described how what were called the Romany people in those long-gone and innocent days cooked their hedgehogs.
Could not find a reference so it must have been in one of the weekly comics rather than in an annual. I then. of course, spent a pleasant half hour browsing through said annuals and came across something that will sort the men of a certain age from the boys.
Number 6 contained this:-
Now, it had been filled in and not in my hand but my father’s. I rather suspect that it was the same thing as happened with the train set and that my Dad played with the annual before I got it from Santa, but I don’t remember.
So, I’ve rubbed out the answers as best I can to give you all a go. Don’t worry, I’ve got plenty of other stuff in his handwriting and this was not a blind-raged piece of vandalism occasioned by the severe trauma which his actions should have engendered in me. At least I don’t think it was.
Enjoy!
Puzzle as solved up to Comment 40

25 Across must be girths, John.

9 across.

I’ve come to the end of my sporting knowledge, John. Watering the various pots and hanging baskets did not result in any inspiration.
I could cheat of course and resort to Google, but I think that may be for later, and it may not produce any meaningful answers.
If someone would kindly provide the answer to 7 Down, I could decide which of my three alternatives to 7 Across is correct!
17 down is Tom.
And 20 across is England, beaten by Hungary at football, 6-3 I think. Puskas and others did the damage.
And before I take a shower, 26 across is table (as in table-tennis).
All answers prior to PNG correcta mundo. I’ve added the solved answers to the post.
Ara, 7 Down is a bit of a specialist knowledge answer. Not there any more as a clue.
Hi. PNG, I trust the shower went well?
17 down, right, 20 across slightly wrongish and 26 down and not across but right.
Oops and bugrit (I think of TB every time I type that).
B12 and D12 are, of course, blacked out.
7 Down John. Longshot, and I’m not entirely happy with this, but it does fit I think. Ashburton Grove.
Ara. A miss but not that far away. Further North.
Winchmore Hill?
Oops sorry, that doesn’t fit either. Drat.
Ara – This guy sang there in the 1940’s.
Seriously deluded in his politics, in my opinion, but I can see where he had to be coming from and he did have a glorious voice.
Oh, gracious me, yes, I have never associated Paul Robeson with Communism. John.
Back to the drawing board!
One of my hobby horses, Ara. Did my Sixth Year Studies History on the Junior Senator from Wisconsin, Joe McCarthy and that whole, mad era in America. PR was one of the victims – virtually expunged at the time. Even the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People disowned him.
He was, of course, completely wrong in his beliefs, in my opinion, but he was also completely honest and consistent, again in my opinion. And he did have the most fantastic voice.
Evenin’, JM
10 Across – Russia
12 Down – Draws
21 Down – Sailing
23 Across – Autumn
24 down – Tiger
OZ
I have just had a most interesting roam around the internet, finding out about Paul Robeson. I had no idea, John. Of course, it didn’t help with the crossword clue but fascinating stuff.
OZ
Esta correcto!
I like 14 Across. And I genuinely believe that 20 Across will require a google unless we have serious Gunners fans out there.
21 Down
Sailing
D’oh. Already done!
Pseu.
Had we but world enough and time, this answer would not be a crime.
But since we’re in a linear thrust, I think you’ll find OZ was first.
D’oh, Pseu. I see you got your retraction in first.
JM – Any chance of an update on the solutions, pretty please?
11 Across – Bedser
OZ
Ok, OZ.
Correct, of course.
I’m just waiting for the Aussies amongst us to come in with the answers to all those other cricket clues.
Update on its way.
28 Down – Handle
OZ
OZ, One too many letters.
JM – I suspect the Aussies are too busy crying into their beer this evening to comment. They should have stuck to cricket.
Singing all together now, “Deutchland, Deutchland, über alles…….”
Mwahahahaha! 😀
OZ
Stupid wolf! Two too many letters.
Correction to 28 down – Edge
OZ
16 Across – Asset
OZ
13 Down – Eagle
OZ
Updated solution added to post
JM – That’s better! 🙂
2 Down – Girlish
3 Down – Toes
5 Down – Tries
14 Across – Neither
18 Across – Elbow
22 Across – See
I really do need to get out more.
OZ
OZ, every one correct.
Just leaves us with 7 down tormenting Ara, 20 Across for diehard Gooner fans and 9/27 down.
29 Across awarded to Papaguinea who never returned from his shower. OK, he said 20 Across and ‘England’ instead of ‘English’ but close enough to give him the coconut for that clue.
JM – “Every one correct”. On a 1955 kids’ crossword! Oh, God, I DO need to get out more!
Thanks for the fun and nighty night for now. I’ll have another think in the morning.
