Slug frogs

My son is helping in the kitchen garden at school as one of his AOB activities. He came home yesterday with a selection of radishes which are delicious.

“Slight slug damage,” he says.

“That’s OK, ” I reply, trimming off the bits that look nibbled.

“Mrs S says we’re going to get some of those slug frogs.”

“Slug frogs?” I reply, thinking, that’ll mean a pond and tadpoles and all that palaver which may not be easy to manage in a school.

“Yes, you know,” he said, “little creatures that destroy the slugs.”

“Do you mean the ones that you put into a watering can and pour over the soil?”

He shrugs.

“Not slug frogs,” I say, “Do you mean nema- toads?”

Now he’s laughing – and I wonder if he knew all along.
