Muslim doctors and nurses are to be allowed to opt out of strict hygiene rules introduced by the NHS to restrict the spread of hospital superbugs.
Now, this really is outrageous pandering to one form of organised superstition over another.

I’m glad I live here and not there…
Did anyone listen to the link that Pseu put up:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00rtcqy/Unreliable_Evidence_07_04_2010/
It was extremely interesting, and seemed to indicate that many of these sort of things should not occur.
Agreed Bravo,
This is complete and utter bollocks.
They either follow the rules of the job or they look for another one seemples.
I did start to listen but gave up after about 20 mins. The lawyers were not saying anything that hasn’t been publisged or discussed elsewhere. None of them made the point that discrimination on religious grounds is illegal in this country and that for the law to be apllicable to all that means favourable discrimination as well as unfavourable. Making loopholes in the law because of superstition is unacceptable, whatever flavour of superstition is involved.
PS. Can you imagine anything more laughable than an omnipotent being caring a tuppeny fig about whether the lady at number 19 has bare arms or not?
One of the points the programme did make was that the latest round of pushing for ‘exemptions’ emanates from EU legislation of around 2000 and something.
Boa, indeed, and also about the conflicts between the thrice-cursed human rights legislation and anti-discrimination legislation.
Completely ridiculous nonsense, Bravo. Now why does it not surprise me that the EU figures in this; what about the human rights of the patients?
Having read your link, Bravo, I immediately resolved that should such a person approach me if I had to be admitted to hospital, I would scream blue murder and refuse to allow her near me. Nothing should interfere with hygiene in hospitals, certainly not some ideology that has not developed at all since about the 12th century.
I agree that all staff should have to conform to hygiene rules.
Can a link to the alleged EU connection be supplied?
Having been the victim of a hospital acquired infection, I would also insist that stff not complying with the same hygiene rules as everyone else would not be allowed anywhere near me.
Brendano – I suggest you listen to the link. The program is quite long, but I think worth while.
Yes, Araminta, yes indeed. Patients have the right not to be exposed to infections in hospital. Anyone who puts their religion before their job should change jobs.
