  1. Brings back memories, Levent. Years ago, we used to frequent a Turkish restaurant; well to be fair it was owned by a Turkish Cypriot, and my favourite was Iskende kebab. You may well want to correct my spelling here, but it was delicious.

  2. Good morning Araminta. Yes, Iskender Kebab is my favourite too. It takes its name from the “inventor”. Iskender is the pronouncitaion of Alexander in Turkish. The home hometown is Bursa, a city close to Istanbul. The grandkids of Iskender is still doing it. Their’s is like no any other. People goes to Bursa just for eating it.

    Hello T,

Interesting story. I once ate Doner in Berlin. It wasn’t bad.

  3. Hi Levent, good post. I’m not a big fan of kebabs, probably because I haven’t tried the right one yet. I’ll open up my horizons and give Iskender a try.

  4. Hee Hee Levent,

    T-minus 8 days and counting.

A post on Turkish food is exactly what I need. I shall add Iskender to the must try list. Thanks 🙂

  5. Seems like we have requited already four. We will conquer the world! Resistance is futile. :))))))

Ferret, I hope you find a decent one.

  6. Dozens of fast-food kebab shops sprang up in Dublin around 20 years ago, mainly in the Abrakebabra chain. I used to eat a lot of doners. These were different from the ones I’d had in London … lots of chilli sauce and garlic mayonnaise. Yum.

I noticed lots of kebab shops in Munich last year. Good falafels.

  7. In this neck of the woods they are generally considered to be late night after the pub food and, rightly or wrongly, a suspect in a few cases of food poisoning a few years ago, and when I worked in casualty…and therefore I have never had one.

  8. Aussie Kebabs Bearsy?
Ah, you mean the bacon and eggs variety, with lots of BBQ sauce.
But when it comes to some of those delicious fast foods our migrants cook, I have been a fan or a long time.
Beats a cheese and vegemite sandwich by a mile.

  9. Me too. Some of the old Greeks in Marrickville do their heritage proud. Homemade tzatziki on freshly roasted lamb….Yummy.
(not so according to the wife, how claims she has to turn me over in my sleep)

  10. hate to say it but Levent is right. Tzatziki is Turkish as is Humous. But not Tarama that is certainly Greek.
Baclava, Kadaifi also turkish but not Galactabouriko. Halva is middle eastern, not Turk or Greek.

Kebab Turk, better though Souvulaki which is Greek and better meat.

  11. We do not have this stupid Turk versus Greek rivalry in Oz. It is left behind when they become Australian. It occasionally surfaces at footy matches, as does the Greek versus Macedonian thing, but it soon gets stamped on by the local communities. We mix Greek and Turkish food terms and nobody gives a stuff.

  12. Crikey Bearsy, are you awake already? It must be time for me to got to bed. Enjoy your coffee.
