Five a day – or is it seven?

For some years now we have been encouraged in the UK to eat a minimum of ‘5 a day’ that is five portions of fruit and vegetables: among the benefits being promoted are weight loss, healthier heart and less cancer.

However when last in Australia I noticed some supermarkets promoting 7 a day, with the slogan,
“Go for two and five” – that is two fruit portions and five vegetable portions.

Made me wonder if the UK didn’t dare go there: which Brits would even consider trying to fit in 7 portions of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis?

Anyhoo a new report suggests that more fruit and veg doesn’t actually translate into as much benefit as had been predicted. See here

There are still benefits and

“Yinka Ebo of Cancer Research UK said: “It’s still a good idea to eat your five-a-day but remember that fruits and vegetables are pieces in a much larger lifestyle jigsaw.

“There are many things we can do to lower our chances of developing cancer such as not smoking, keeping a healthy weight, cutting down on alcohol, eating a healthy balanced diet, being physically active and staying safe in the sun.” ”

So its a sunny Friday. What’s on your menu tonight?

  1. Blimey, Nym: I never ever take any notice of government directives about anything; it’s mainly rubbish.

Supper tonight is sea bass, with butter, lemon and herbs, jacket potatoes and steamed kale.

  2. Two grapes, five peas, steak, chops, ribs, bacon and eggs. Afterwards we chew some ‘backy, hold up a keg, put some coke in the rum, have some dark and white chocolate, go down and up the stairs to the basement to get some more beer and put the sunnies on.
    I love being healthy.

  3. Bravo; with you there. Steak and loadsa veg. I skip the potatoes/pasta in the evenings though – hangover from the ridiculous Atkins days. Helps keep slim n trim though. Then I go and ruin it all with the wine!
    Ara; cheers then!
Rainer; God, how on earth can you fit all that food in? Five a day, not fifty five a day!

  4. The sea bass was superb!

I ate more fruit and veg as the carer of a slightly damaged lizard. She had a hugely varied diet, in minute quantities, and I was duty-bound to take care of the rest. God bless her.

  5. Well, as long as it’s not a staple, Gwen …! Welcome, btw, good to see you here. 🙂

  6. Oh, Gwen: we decided to forget the Easter eggs this year, so I just bought the daughters one each. I don’t count this actually, because I wasn’t aware that the government had decided they were BAD. I could have missed it of course! 🙂

  7. Latest is that very dark chocolate is good for you…

That’s my biggest problem with all this ‘eat this’ and ‘don’t eat that’ – it changes on such a regular basis that one doesn’t know whether to eat something or not. By the time one’s changed the diet, it’s time to change it again.

All this research is the 21st century version of the time-immemorial search for the ‘Elixir of Life’.

Last night’s meal was Indian, Ozzie style, and wine.

  8. Fresh leek soup from the garden.

Lamb kidneys stew over rice with sprouting broccoli from the garden.

It is as cold as the proverbial here today, snow on the mountains and I’ve been outside in Canada most of the day I’m freezing!

As much red wine as I can get down!
