I’m changing again

Just trying it out really, but I thought I’d alter my gravitar and see if it works more promptly this time.

I just love this snow sculpture and the fact it was made and snapped at night, ready for everyone to wake up to.I really will post a ‘proper blog’ soon, but am completely overtired… too much work and no play makes Pseu a sad girl. here’s to the weekend!

  1. Hello, oh tired one. I hope you can have a bit of a rest at the weekend, or at least a respite from work. I can’t really see your new Gravitar. They are really quite tiny on this new template. I’ll just dash off to find my magnifying glass 😉

  2. Excuse me, Exhausted One (and ‘aveagoodweekend’)

Beary, I left this comment elsewhere: “If I go into my dashboard, click on ‘recent comments’ and ‘view all’, some email addresses are displayed and some are not (mine isn’t) Do you know the reason for this?”

  3. Hi Bilby – sorry, I missed your earlier question.

Excuse me for a techo’s pendancy, but ‘recent comments’?

I have a ‘Comments’ section in my Dashboard, which shows all the e-mails, and

I have a “recent comments” section in the Dashboard page of my Dashboard (confusing, isn’t it?), which only has 5 entries, and those don’t include any e-mail addresses at all!

I have to admit I don’t have a clue, but if you could be a little more specific, and perhaps tell me which names (other than yours) don’t have e-mail addresses, I expect I could find out. 🙂

  4. I assure you that the little seated figure is what the web is broadcasting. That is what is visible on any browser that has been beaten into submission by its owner! 😉

  5. Morning Nym,
When I first looked it was the ol’ needle n thread on my firefox browser. One quick “ctrl & F5” to force update the cache and presto, li’l snowy ice geezer.

    Bearsy,
One niggle, the icon is almost impossible to make out. Is there a way on this template of viewing avatars in a larger format?

  6. G’day Bearsy

Apologies, I misled you by saying “click on ‘recent comments'”.

Under the ‘recent comments’ section (below the 5 displayed comments) there is a ‘view all’ button. If you click on that you will see that some members have email addresses and others do not, eg Araminta, Paul, Ferret have addresses displayed, but Sheona, Sipu and Ike do not.

I talked to Araminta this morning and she thinks that those with their own sites on WordPress are also those with email addresses displayed, but we’re not sure what purpose it serves as one cannot access members’ sites from the ‘recent comments’ section.

  7. Oh Ferret, I wish there were. But no, we have to take what we’re given. That’s one of the reasons why I chose the old template in the first place. 😦

  8. I’m sorry Bilby, I don’t know! 😯

On my version, all members have their e-mail addresses showing, and those who have websites of their own have the web address also shown – on which one can click to visit.

Each member’s IP address is given, too.

Is it the same on Araminta’s computer?

  9. Hi Bearsy: yes it is. I can see urls to sites on WordPress for those who have them, plus email and IP addresses. But some are just blank. I don’t think its a problem but it is odd.

  10. Bearsy :

Thanks Araminta, I shall explore further and get back to you (and Bilby).

    and Ethel.

Ta, Bearsy. I don’t suppose it is important in the least, I was just curious.

PS I really hate these nests!

  11. Stranger and stranger, Araminta.
BarTender, who is an Author, like you and Bilby, can only see website addresses for those that have them. There are no e-mail addresses for anyone, and no IPs.

Why can you see some, when poor old BarTender can’t see any?

Bearsy is sobbing in the corner!

  12. Bilby – Bearsy can turn the nesting off, if you can get everyone else (or a majority) to agree. 😉

  13. Yes, I know, Bearsy. 🙂 Just wondered if you were joking about 1) turning off the nesting and 2) getting everyone (or a majority) to agree. 😉

  14. I’m not joking – I can turn it off at a stroke, but I wouldn’t dare do it unless most agreed (It’s you, I and Ferret, so far, I think).

  15. How wonderful! I looked at Araminta’s blog this morning and I don’t think the nesting works well with a long thread; very confusing.

  16. Ah, I see. I just deleted the “quote” and my comment ended up where it shouldn’t be. 😉

  17. I agree entirely, Bilby. I spent all my time racing up and down trying to find who was doing what and to whom. (Do you know that limerick?)

Shall I (tomorrow, it’s late now) put up a new Poll so that everyone can vote on it? Give them 5 minutes to respond and then switch the darn things off anyway? 😆

  18. I think I know why the views vary Bearsy. I can see IP and email addresses of those who comment on MY posts on this site. I suspect that is why you cannot as Bartender.

  19. I don’t like nesting either, but maybe it’s because we are used to comments just slotting in at the bottom of the thread as we are used to. I keep whizzing up and down too trying to find who sneeked a comment in when I wasn’t looking 😉

  20. Bearsy :

    Eh? Three and a half!

Bearsy, I replied to your comment earlier which only had a choice of ‘quote’ instead of ‘reply/quote’. I didn’t wish to ‘quote’ your comment, so I deleted the code, which took me out of the nesting sequence.

  21. Thank you Araminta, that sounds like it. I shall comment on (or to) myself – if you see what I mean!

Bilby – Boadicea agrees, so we’re up to 4 already. Can you sort Araminta? 😉

  22. I must say that I like the way the blog owner icon shows on the right of the comments. That is a nice touch.

I just can’t get on with the nesting milarky. I thought that it was mandatory, if there is no need to keep the nesting I see no rea need to have time stamps.

  23. Hi Ferret. I’d like to go back to the first site, with no nesting. However, if there are no time stamps, how does one reply to a comment, say much earlier in the thread, without cutting and pasting a quote or saying “I’m replying to your comment which is no 17 in the thread? 😉

  24. I know.

Its a reet bugger Bilby an no mistake.

With nesting, the numdering system moves as and when replies are inserted. Without nesting I hope the #No. thing would be more static.

    8)

  25. OK Bilby,

Today is the start of the 6 Nations, I am watching Ireland stuff Italy as a warm up. Later England are playing Wales. That is one we simpy have to win. 🙂

  26. Sadly still v tired, BTW. Thanks for your cympathies.
Nap before curry and quiz pm I feel. See you later.

  27. Nym – have you not read my e-mail to you?

Complete with instructions on how to sort your browser out? I spent ages writing it for you and sent it to you days ago. The same advice is also available here under FAQs -> Changing gravatars.

It would have been nice if you had said a polite ‘thank you’ when I corrected your Dashboard problems for you. I shall not offer again.

  28. Bearsy, apologies. I have been struggling with migraine headache and tiredness most of the week, and may have not picked up on all the instructions. Please forgive me. Will do my best to now I’m clearer.

  29. “Firefox is also meant to be well-behaved – I haven’t checked – so all should be well there, too.”

I’m on Firefox and I tried the F5 and control keys trick and am still seeing a needles and thread. How long should I hold it down? I’ll have another go!

  30. And this time I tried control with F5 and the + symbol, but have just succeeded in making everything on the screen bigger….

  31. Pseu

Go to the FAQ’s, page, I wrote a detailed instruction on clearing the cache in Firefox (with pictures 😉 )

It is currently the final set of comments.

  32. I called in my techie adviser. (16 year old son) who went to tools and advanced etc… just as Soutie says.

(Are you fed up with me yet. Shall I go away?)

  33. Araminta – your are, of course, correct in your deduction. Thanks and well done!

It is in accordance with the definition of “User Roles” for an author, too.

  34. Soutie – many thanks for trying to help here, and sorry I haven’t got around to transferring your Firefox explanation to the appropriate page yet.

I don’t believe that Nym reads anything, so you’re probably wasting your time 😉

  35. Bearsy, I don’t think its Nyn’s fault, she is having a very bad week by the sound of things and despite your excellent help, maybe it’s just not not a good time. This site is quite complicated and it may take us a while to get used to its idiosyncrasies 🙂

  36. I tried Bearsy method, but it didn’t work. Soutie’s method did… just so anyone else with Firefox knows for future ref.

  37. Araminta – Nym
Point taken. But you know me, gruff and grumpy on the surface, but a heart of gold underneath. Hope you’re feeling better Nym, glad that Soutie’s instructions finally sorted things out for you. Take no notice of me, I’m always better after the second cup of tea. 😉

  38. Hi, Nym

Hope you are feeling better. I don’t suffer from migraines, but our mother had terrible problems for a number of years and felt very desperate; it must be awful.

It’s good you are not nesting, which may be from choice or residual exhaustion. 🙂
Ferret and I have an agreement, signed in blood apparently. I am very careful now about nesting because, if I don’t abide by the conditions, my fur will fall out and other hideous consequences. Doesn’t bear thinking about really. Take care! 🙂

  39. Thanks Bilby. Very relieved Bearsy that I haven’t done irrevocable damage to our friendship.

Now I shall have to be specially careful not to nest….

  40. Not many votes so far. As we appear to be ahead though (last time I looked), and in the spirit of your previous comments, why not go for it! It’s all a trial, innit? 😉

  41. Bilby – I have to take Boadicea out for an appointment in an hour or so, probably two hours before I’m back at the computer. By that time most other bloggers will be a-bed, so I’ll flick the switch and see what happens to our existing comments. If it doesn’t look too bad, I’ll leave it that way.

On the other hand, if it jumbles everything up, I’ll switch it back on.

Then we’ll have to choose an appropriate time for people not to nest, so that we can change the setup again after current nested comments have moved into the past. If you see what I mean – I’m not too sure that I do!!

  42. Yes, Bearsy, I understand. Sounds good and reasonable to me after a third reading. ;)Let’s hope for a good outcome!

  43. Now I shall not be able to use that Monty Python quote I’ve been storing up my sleeve. (It’s my belief they’re nesting. They don’t so much fly as plummet )
