Right.
Big games tomorrow (NZ time) I’ve a trivia quiz for our rugby loving members but not quite now, I’ll be publishing the quiz about this time tomorrow, just to keep you tossing and turning ’till you wait for the kickoffs π
In the meantime name the players sent off in this game (I was there), which became known as ‘The Battle of the Boet” (our stadium was called the Boet Erasmus stadium)
Of course our province was known for no nonsense hard rugby, in fact the 1st “Battle of the Boet” that I saw was actually between Willie John’s Lions and Eastern Province (yes, I was there, as I was at the test)
Try and get the names before the announcer, here’s a clue, 3 were sent off, perhaps still a RWC record!

What year was my 1st “Battle of the Boet”?
What was Willie Johns famous “battle cry”
Which doctor played fullback (for the Lions)? I actually watched him run the full half of the field to get a punch on one of our guys.
Enjoy the games, Soutie, but I doubt I could contribute anything to the quiz. π
Hello Soutie: Your age is showing, I watched the video (ouch) and cheated on the first. The others I know
The first battle was 1974 (that’s thirty seven years ago), the Willie John “Battle Cry” was “99”
and the Lions fullback? One of the best ever IMHO – JPR Williams, one tough Welshman, how he managed to avoid broken knuckles I do not know (He was an Orthopedic Surgeon).
Ah, those were the days of old when men were men and women were grateful.
I remember a great quote from JPR that he only played soccer to keep in shape when recovering from a rugby injury. They should tattoo it onto Rooney, Tevez, Cherry et al., not to mention the great mergulhador himself, effin’ Ronaldo.
OZ
Some interesting odds. Paddy Power thinks it will be an NZ-England final at 3/1. I still think that SA might make it, so my money’s on SA-England at 14-1. Not a great return, but better than a … well, you know π
Thank you Ara, we have 2 on Saturday (5:00gmt and 7:30gmt) and the the same again on Sunday, all over by lunchtime.
Morning LW, the SA v Canada match was the one were our floodlights failed, James Dalton’s sending off meant that he was out of the tournament and missed he ’95 final, not sure if he still qualified for a winners medal though.
I’ve just wiki’d the ’74 tour, Gareth Edwards, Phil Bennet, Mighty Mouse Mclauchlan, Big Merv Davies to name a few, some team!
And rugby tours were rugby tours!
They played 22 matches (including 4 tests) all of our provincial sides plus Rhodesia and South West Africa, 2Β½ months.
Oh, they were also unbeaten! π
Howzit Bravo, I said here over the weekend that an Ireland / Bokke final wouldn’t surprise me, I see your bookie has it at 20/1
I think Ireland-Wales is almost to close to call, but I think Ireland will shade it. Meanwhile, what I grew up with:
Here’s JPR in action. The tries are good but there are a couple of outstanding tackles, one about 1:40 against England (full stride to absolute standstill) and one later on the French winger (A certain try but then a train wreck right on the line).
I never saw this man play a game with out getting blood on himself (often his own)

Sorry for the ads.
Brilliant. I don’t think I fully appreciated JPR at the time, I was a scum-half and spent most of the time concentrating on Gareth Edwards.
2 great videos although Bravo’s is a bit too early for me π
