29 Years Ago Yesterday

Saw the liberation of the Falkland Islands, probably one of the most successful and remarkable campaigns undertaken by Britain since the Second World War.

Last week the United States signed a declaration calling on Britain and Argentina to begin negotiations over the future sovereignty of the Islands. The Americans referred to the Islands as the Malvinas!

If Argentina decided again to invade The Falklands, could we in any way resist them? We managed before, only with the help of Regan and Casper Weinberger. Hardly any Americans wanted to support us. Weinberger facilitated the use of Ascension Island and the supply of Sidewinder missiles. These of course were just the more obvious forms of help. I’m not sure that we could ever count on that support again. America has its eyes firmly fixed on the huge reserves of oil and gas under that part of the Atlantic Ocean and think that they stand a better chance in negotiating with the Organisation of America States.

Our stupid Government appears to be walking blindly into the nightmare of reducing our armed forces to a laughing stock. They have scrapped our aircraft carriers, chopped up Nimrod and have mothballed the Harrier.

This is how we must now look like to the rest of the world in general and Argentina in particular. So, if the Argentinians invaded, IMO we could do nothing.

  1. To be clear, it is the idiot Obama and the shrew Hillary, the Botox Evita’s best friend, who are behind this.
Obama has been consistently anti-British from the beginning. He even chose to lie about his grandfather’s history with the British. Obama might be president, but most Americans, especially outside of the liberal coastal enclaves, loathe him.

  2. In ’82 it was the withdrawal of the Endurance that tipped the balance. At least we still have the hunter-killers…but would the boy Dave have the balls, (‘scuse me ladies,’) to use them if push came to shove?

I was in a scrape beside a stone wall brewing up when the word came down and my first thought was ‘Fuck me, (sorry again, ladies, ) I’m alive…’

  3. 29 years ago, Argentina once again “failed to regain” possession of its islands … The Malvinas 😦

  4. Isn’t anyone else getting heartily sick of hearing Hillary’s shrill voice demanding that this country or that country do this or that? I wonder how long it will be before the US decides to change its motto from”Under God We Trust” to “Under God We Rule”? They have a tendency to forget that no one has to listen to their demands…

And as for you, Donald of the Wooden Spoon, an island(s) proximity to a more populous country does not give sovereign rights… Indonesia is a deal bigger than us – I’d like to see your reaction were they to try to claim sovereignty over our ‘little’ island… šŸ™‚

  5. Boadicea dear, you’re a fantastic historian, but your geography is dreadful.
Indonesia has a far greater population than us [roughly 10 times], but its total land area [1,919,440 sq km] is only a quarter of ours [7,617,930 sq km ]. šŸ™‚

  6. America reminds me more and more of an adolescent school bully; physically bigger and stronger than his peers, but without the maturity to temper his outbursts.

    OZ

  7. Boadicea: I think that you would find a great deal of sympathy within the United States. The UK remains the most popular country in the USA, with 80pc holding positive views of it. Argentine tinned beef also used to be the most popular, it’s never recovered from the boycott after the Falkland Islands war.

  8. Admit it …..The fact that all Britishers understand the meaning of the word “Malvinas” clearly points out the fact that once upon a time …… you all knew its proper name. Undeniable proof ….Undeniable! 😦

When 800 Million South Americans tell you …. “The Malvinas are Argentinian” ….. how can 70 million British be right?

It’s just not on …. no … not right, the numbers tell the truth~ 😦

  9. Everyone knows that the Romans called France Gaul – does that give Rome a right to annex France…?

  10. Boadicea :

What gave the British the right to sail across the Atlantic and call anything they found there …”Theirs” šŸ™‚

Regardless of the name of the country claiming the land, those islands belong to the people of the continent of South America, not to those who came across the ocean and took it by force using naval ships against canoes.

There should be a “Mabo” style arrangement on the islands, the British can own it all they want, but the Argentinians should be allowed to go to the casino …. that really is what the fight is all about … even the Argentinians don’t truly care for the island.

(Especially since an Aussie company has already recently found out that there is in fact … very little oil) šŸ™‚

  11. What gave the Spanish, the Portuguese, the Germans, the French, or indeed anyone else the right to sail the world annexing other lands?

Don’t just pick on the British – they were all at it. The Spanish and the Portuguese well before anyone else – after the Pope divided the ‘New Continent’ between those two countries. Where would you be without that Papal Blessing!

Perhaps Britain could reclaim Ireland since it is all part of a group known as the British Isles…

Donald – you are talking rubbish! And you know it! It’s up to the people on the land itself to determine where it belongs.

I’m sure the Casino (I didn’t know there was one) on the Islands would be more than delighted to take Argentinian money… but not at the wrong end of a gun! šŸ™‚

Not just picking of the British,……. they just happen to be the last ones not to return stolen property šŸ™‚

Spain still hasn’t given back the gold they stole 😦

Portugal don’t matter, Brazilians can keep the Jungles šŸ™‚

  13. Can’t see why anybody wanted to round the Horn in the first place. I mean, all they found was Australia. 😦

  14. Argentina continues to beat the drums of war:-

“Jorge Arguello, Argentina’s ambassador to the United Nations, used the latest controversy to repeat his claim that Britain’s place as a permanent member of the UN Security Council should be reviewed.”

“The international community should carefully reconsider the status of countries that continue to form a permanent part of the Security Council; especially those who systematically ignore or violate General Assembly decisions,” Arguello said.”

    More here.

This is of course the very same country that that not too long ago was abducting and murdering anyone who stood in their corrupt way.

Then of course you have the stolen children.
