Just occasionally the Great British Public’s voice is heard above the political and diplomatic babble. We don’t want to fire another shot from the hip at another Arab despot whose behaviour we can’t stomach. We don’t accept the ‘findings of the security community’ as justification for intervening in somebody else’s war. We don’t do gun-boats any more or buy into the ‘judgement calls’ of an over-zealous Cabinet. We think the grand ole US of A can please its bloody self, kill some putative terrorists and regret its actions later – or not. We are separated by more than a common language from their culture, their obsession with Israel and their lack of perspective on most important issues.
PS I am reminded by WordPress that this is my 400th post popped through the Chariot letterbox. Sorry.
I recall that the feeling on here a couple of months ago was that we should simply leave despots, dictators, tyrants etc to bomb, kill, shoot, persecute and nerve gas their opponents at will
Only 400? 😉 Apology accepted 🙂
Gore J-man,
Off blog. Well played on reaching your 400. A Lara moment.
One of the rare occasions when I find myself agreeing with you wholeheartedly; well almost. I am not sure that the ‘religion’ tag is relevant in this instance.
Congratulations Janus! Well done – and thanks 🙂
On topic – I couldn’t agree more. I know for a fact that Australia will jump in with both boots whoever the next PM is. We always do – despite, as I suspect, there being even less support for another war here than there was for Iraq and that was pretty low.
I wish I could understand why it is perfectly acceptable for Foreign Governments to shoot, bomb, or otherwise kill or maim their own people, but when chemicals are used we in the west have to intervene by ‘shooting, bombing, or otherwise killing and maiming’ the exact same people.
There’s a twisted logic there that I just don’t get…
Congratulations, Janus. I too am pleased that parliament voted not to stick Britain’s nose into the Syrian mess. I think Cameron has his hero Blair to thank for that.
I seem to have missed the fact that Britain will not join whatever the US do – the last I heard was that Cameron was making war-like noises.
How ironic that the last time a Government lost a vote to go to war was in 1792, when parliament refused to continue the war with the rebel American States – and has now been defeated in its determination to go to war in alliance the US…
Love it 🙂
When will ‘Me-ri-ca learn that ‘Me-ri-can jurisdiction ends at ‘Me-ri-ca’s borders?
OZ
Only when the rest of the world has the courage to tell America that…
So O’Bammy has stood up and said quite clearly that with or without the UK he will do whatever is in the best interests of the US of A?

Hang on a cotton pickin’ mo there Cochise. I thought this was supposed about the best interests of the innocent Syrian civvy?
Nice one on the 4th century Hugh.
As you say Ferrett – the USA will act according to what it sees as ITS best interests… Surprise, surprise.
Boadicea, I take it you mean 1782 and that you are referring to the vote of no confidence in Lord North’s administration in March of that year? The war officially ended in Paris Peace Treaty was in 1783.
I was chuffed to bits to hear this news. This war is only Syria’s to fight. The less we in the West have to do with it the better. Assad is a wretched, horrible man — but the opposition is arguably even worse. It is possible to work with Assad, it is impossible to work with the others. The Obama regime has managed to get itself into a situation where it is fighting on al Qaeda’s side.
To be fair, there is almost no popular support in the USA for an attack on Syria — there was very, very little support for an attack on Libya, either. Some polls show that less than 10pc of Americans support military action. Ssadly, Obama will almost certainly not seek either the support of the UN or the permission of the American parliament to launch military strikes.
One more occasion to run out my inhumanitarian crack!
The only good one is a dead one! The more that kill each other over there the better and the less in Birmingham and Vancouver airport!!
One hell of a form of birth control.
For once Parliament got it right, actually after Blair’s WMD scam in Iraq. I don’t think any of the British public of whatever persuasion are willing to expend blood and treasure on any bunch of ragheads anywhere.
Just leave them to it.
Seemingly the politicians have heard the message from their constituencies.
Being utterly cynical may I suggest that the next general election is a little too near time wise for them to ignore their reselection committees?
Keeping one’s head in the trough is of course their premier consideration!
I suppose it is too much to hope for that this will topple the government or at least dislodge the cronies?
Should Cameron want a war, a far more productive choice would be Roumania before their scum invade us next year by the million. Get them before they can make it to the DHSS offices!
Christina, a thoroughly decent and human comment! 🙂
Thought you’d like it J, speshully for you!
Don’t sit on the fence, Cristina – tell it like it is.

Christina, it would appear that the Romanians will have to get in the queue at the DHSS offices behind all the Greeks, Spaniards, Portuguese and Irish who are flocking to Britain just now.
Like my dad used to to tell me when he was about to do something dangerous, or foolish, or both. “You can help, or you can watch, or you can just get out of the f*cking way”
