Lock 7 (Schenectady) to Troy – August 7

Left the lock 7 wall at 8:00 to try to make it to Troy by mid afternoon as a storm was threatening, hard to believe as this was the morning view.

The wind did get up later in the day and as we are locking down it made some of these lock entries a bit dicey.

Locks 7 through 2 (no lock 1 on the Erie Canal) are all big barge locks with a drop of between 30 and 40 feet each so we go down about 200 feet in this stretch.

This is 6 or 5 they are all very similar.

Between locks the canal opens up into the Mohawk Valley a pleasant place, a few islands

and after each lock a look back at the dam usually with a generating station.

Under the I 87 bridge which we crossed over on our trip back to Maryland

and through our last lock at Troy (number 95 by our count) to a safe berth close to the lift bridge, quite an elegant bridge in an industrial sort of way.

Down the Hudson to Sauguties tomorrow, weather permitting.

  1. I see from Google that the green island bridge goes over starbucks island, any connection with a well known coffee company?

  2. In my incarnation as a school teacher after the decades of biz, I showed a class a map of NY state (with Troy prominently marked) and asked them if a town on the map reminded them of Homer. Immediate response. Yes, Springfield.
