Something stirred. So faint that I scarcely heard,
But the forest leapt at the sound,
Like a good ship homeward bound.
Down in the forest something stirred,
It was only the song of a bird.
But it was quiet inside the 5,200-year-old burial chamber, just a stone’s throw from our front door. It’s what’s known as a ‘passage grave’ – referring to its construction, not its purpose! Excavated 140 years ago by the then-landowner, about the same time as our house was built for his gamekeeper-cum-forest bailiff.
Good looking Cave entrance IM expert and unhumble O.
OZ
OZ, food locally available, quiet neighbours, vacant possesssion……… 🙂
Intriguing, Janus.
Arrers, it’s the dead centre of the forest…. 🙂
Wonderful, Janus. Did you take the photograph?
Have you ventured in, Janus?
Scary. Especially with that half-pint Stonehenge rock formation standing sentinel. Shorty boulder bouncers.
Off blog, J-man, and on another blog of yours, listen to this. While nosingy about the Chariot’s stats, comments etc. I see there are two comments in the spam bin belonging to gazoopi. After a quick check at our distinguished competition (i.e MYT), gazoopi, obscure name admittedly, seems to be a genuine blogger. Hurry up and confirm the comments. We might procure ourselves a new author.
c***ic! Nosingy/ nosying. It’s just like that tomato/tomahto thingy. (S-man, stick a big smiley in here) 🙂
The entrance is just high enough to crawl into. After a couple of yards it opens up into a passage leading maybe 10 ft. left and 10 ft right, with a ceiling of ‘normous flat stones about 4 ft six above the floor. It feels dry and fresh.
Arrers, sadly no, I nicked the pic from an archæologist’s website.
JW, I’ve cleared gazoopi’s comments but can’t find the! Help!
“Local food available.” What are we talking here? Venison? Boar? Some strange Scandinavian meat on an open sandwich?
