Ottawa to Long Island Locks – July 18

(Five days without internet service, some serious catching up is required)

Off our mooring wall at 9 am (the first bridge does not open until after rush hour)

Out through Ottawa South past Rideau Gardens, I used to live about one block over from this point in the ‘70’s

1

On down the canal,  the towpath now a level bike trail following the water

2

First or second lock at Hog’s Back  lovely name….

3

4

Then on to Long Island Locks , a flight of three (#14 through #16 counting from the Ottawa River) only about thirty more to go on the Rideau system before Kingston.

8

Moored for the night beneath the flight on a country wall , not a soul about.  Ready for first lock through at 9 in the morning.

Planned to run to Merrickville next but weather intervened, hanging here for the day (19th).

  1. Picturesque as ever, LW.

It’s a pity the cyclists can’t pedal on the water, I’d like to know what the boat to bike etiquette would be like? There’d be some river rage from the Captain of the ships.

“Who’d you think you are? Chris Froome. Get out of my fathom.”

  2. Interesting, LW.

One question I have been meaning to ask. Are the locks thus far all manned? I assume so, because of the time restrictions you have mentioned, and the fact that they are all on quite serious waterways.

  3. Now then LW, where are you going to go on holiday to get over all of this?

  4. Ara: All manned about 50/50 male and female, mostly college kids working their summer. No helping allowed and following the Lockmaster’s orders is mandatory.

CO: As my Hungarian friend used to say when working hard “At home ve call dis vacation”
