She’s the most unlikely athlete to look at. None of the usual wasp waist and slender limb. But she oozes determination with her shadow-shots – all double-handed and as ungainly as her play. But she wins – and might just spring a surprise today. And then she’ll do this again, I’m sure. Wimbledon, 2 pm BST.

Janus – she’s a meat ball. Can you re-submit your photo upside down please? I may get a better idea of her tennis dynamics. (PS I am supporting the German.)
I think the adjective “homely” might be used to describe Bartoli. Her German opponent with the lovely smile reminds us of one of our daughter-in-law, so we’re rooting for her.
A well deserved first set to Bartoli.
No idea who it is! But as it is an unseemly public display….. It must be Wimbledon!
She won! Yes!!!! š
Just had the misfortune to see a clip of the last few seconds of the finals. What is all this crazed gorilla imitation?
Tennis used to be an elegant game that was a pleasure to watch…not anymore!
I cannot understand why the Wimbledon powers that be have allowed the whole thing to disintegrate into a bear garden filled with such ape like behaviour. All so very ugly.
Why should anyone care which ugly ape won?
British society does not improve.
The German player is definitely not an ugly ape, Christina. And any repetition of that expression tomorrow when Andy Murray plays could result in a “welcome” committee of one at Heathrow in a few weeks.
I see John Inverdale of the BBC is in hot water for implying she is not exactly a Sharapova. Seems rather inappropriate to me, but I cannot stand tennis anyway. Important news of the day is that the Lions won.
She sure ain’t no Andrea Temesvari.
Didn’t watch the women’s Final today I went for a long walk instead and I won’t be watching the men’s Final tomorrow as envy will set in as that should have been me. Did I ever tell any one I was the school tennis Champion?
They don’t particularly look like crazed ugly apes, just behave like them!
Well, Christina, the boys will be doing it today at 2 pm BST. Our Andy (British when he wins, remember) will be trying to find the flaws in Novak’s game; the odd shaky backhand return, the occasional slip on the turf. IMHO neither has the skill of Roger but it will be a power play of ginormous proportions.
J, I’m afraid I lost all interest years ago in tennis.
All that grunting, shouting, holding the racquet with two hands, no rallies and just smashing it at each other reduced the whole game from something rather graceful to the utterly bestial.
I couldn’t care less who won or lost or where they come from.
That’s shame, Christina, because at it’s best the modern game is exciting and not all wham, bam, thankyou ma’am! Some of the rallies in the semis were as good as anything by Laver and Co.
