PORT Elizabeth shivered as the temperature plunged to an icy low of 1.9°C yesterday – the lowest temperature recorded in the city in five years.
In August 2008, the mercury plummeted to a freezing -0.7°C, according to the SA Weather Service’s Garth Sampson.
The cold and snow experienced in large parts of the Eastern Cape at the weekend and yesterday were, however, expected to clear this week, with temperatures in the mid-20s predicted.
Today’s minimum in Port Elizabeth was expected to be about 7°C, with a high of 23°C.
(From the front page of my E.P. Herald yesterday.)
The days however can be quite pleasant.
We stopped off here yesterday for a couple of beers and to watch a bit of the cricket from The (enter stadium sponsors name here) Oval over in London. A mashie golf course on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth, a very popular watering hole and entertainment venue (a ladies hen party arrived during the latter part of the afternoon and were put through their paces with a ‘boot camp’ at the lower field, great spectator value and good fun!)
The owner can’t get planning permission to enlarge the place hence the circus tent lopped onto the side which I suppose is considered a temporary structure and is acceptable to the clowns at the council.
Driving to the course my car was registering a warm 27°C. but that all changes as the sun goes down and the shadows creep, brrrrrrr!
G’morgen, Soutie! Call that a winter? (Almost a Crocodile Dundee moment)
Môre Janus, it’s winter, but not as you know it (possibly a Star Trek moment)
We’re not geared for cold weather, stick on a jersey, coat and perhaps a scarf and that’ll have to do 😉
“The cold and snow experienced in large parts of the Eastern Cape”
That’s all inland and off to the west and north of us, our winds (light breezes currently but they’ll get worse as winter progresses) come from that direction bringing with them the wind chill factor. the clear skies don’t help either 😦
But we all know the earth is about to explode in a heatwave, thanks to all those nasty people driving their cars. How can this be?
Have to admit I didn’t know it got that cold there.
Morning MrsO
It rarely gets below 5°C here and of course that would normally be during the early hours of the morning when most are tucked up in bed, anything approaching zero is really rare and (as in this case) front page news!
