Huff and puff if you will

As I mentioned yesterday, the Windmill Wars around here seem to be going against us, so we spent some sunny October hours at the weekend exploring a new (for us) area to the East. ……where Mrs J was astounded to find an architectural style completely new to her.

They’re called ‘straw-covered’ houses – not surprisingly, you say – and can be found in and around the fishing village of Hesnæs on the island of Falster (botttom right on the map of Denmark), where the beechwoods overlook the open Baltic sea. And maybe you’ll be envious when I point out that the whole coast is unspoiled by resorts and coastal blight! Yes, and only an hour and half from Copenhagen! That’s conservation for you.

Your 1st pic won’t load for me (forbidden access!!) Perhaps if other members encounter the same problem you might want to select a different pic from a different source.

  2. I have a Scottish cousin who is into erecting buildings made of straw. Essentially straw bales are bound together to make the walls and are covered with a wire mesh and then sprayed with liquid cement. He has plans, which I have seen, to build a castle which already has the nickname, ‘Huff-Puff Castle’. It will probably take about 15 years to build, using the cheap/free labour of university students during their summer vacations. They will get accommodation and a place to party, in exchange for their work. And that really is the purpose of it. A place to have large parties. Of course it all depends on whether he gets planning permission, which is not entirely impossible given his powers of persuasion.

  3. sipu. re straw houses/spray concrete, there is a selection built in Machynlleth at the alternative centre of technology. We have a lot of proper homes built like that out on the islands here in Puget Sound.

janus, don’t like that moss on that roof, looks very expensive to me!!! Noting the shadows tells me it’s on the sunny side of the building it must have taken decades to get that way, ie worn out!
Hopefully you were ‘just looking’! The environment looks very pleasant, surprised they haven’t imported some immigrants!
As a matter of curiosity does Denmark have many immigrants and if not how did they avoid them?

Akshully these houses are not made of straw blocks or owt like that. They are timber-framed, with brick in-fills, covered in straw as a protection against salt wind and weather from Russia.

Fear not, this is an example of the genre , not a target!

Re immigrants: yes, Denmark has a small minority – never had a post-wars labour shortage, but is now suffering criminal incursions from the Eastern EU due to joining Shengen, and encouraging some Arabs post Bush Sr and Jr. Most stay in the bigger cities and are rarely seen in the boondocks at all, maybe deterred by the presence of hunters with dogs and guns!

Dear Mr Wolf, Danish pigs now live in Poland, owing to cheaper grub. Turn right at Hamburg. 🙂
