Passing the black hat

G8 leaders at Camp David (19 May)

The self-appointed global jury of seven just men (and Angela) is still out on the fate of the Hellenic nation. Which is a bit of a surprise, since it must be obvious that membership of the Eurozone is a price too high for their shallow pockets. But nobody among the eight wise persons wants to drive home the final nail – they are all content to remark that “we affirm our interest in Greece remaining in the eurozone while respecting its commitments”, or in other words, pay your bills or get out. Cold-bloodied, eh?

The odd-person-out at the get-together is of course Angela. She can’t encourage Greece to leave the Euroclub because her own economy stands to take the biggest hit and she can’t go for Eurogrowth because effective devaluation will hit her hardest. And she dislikes the fact that these seven global fellas have the affrontery to discuss ‘her’ Europroblems. Poor Ange, now bereft of a little French shoulder to cry on too.

As soon as I saw your picture “Ten green bottles” jumped right into my head 😉

  2. G’dag, Soutie! Yes – I wonder which one will ‘accidentally fall’ first?

  3. The whole thing seems like a platitude-fest to me. I’m with Angela. What does Obama know about anything? And if she were to cry on Hollande’s shoulder, she’d make his crumpled suit look even worse.

  4. The German Sheeple might have something to say about her rescue plan for Greece. I imagine they are getting fed up with bailing the feckless, workshy Greeks out time after time.

  5. It seems to me that the Greek people do not want to be rescued. I can’t say that I blame them – the cure seems to be worse than the disease. I’ve yet to read a convincing argument that might convince those Greek who expected to tighten their belts even further to want to stay in the Euro Club.

Someone ought to tell the ‘wise men’ of Europe (plus Angela) that it is a daft idea to pour Good Money after Bad. Greece should have been thrown out of the Euro the minute it looked like it was going bankrupt.

Instead, one rescue plan after another has been pushed on the long suffering (literally) Greek population all of which would seem to increase their suffering.

Why does it surprise anyone that the Greeks want no more? Why does it surprise anyone that they have not voted for parties determined to impose more ‘austerity’ measures. For heavens sake – who really expects anyone to vote for more pain?

  6. Yet according to opinion polls the majority of Greeks do want to stay in the single currency, Boadicea. They just don’t want the nasty medicine that goes with that course of action.

It is a measure of the incompetence of the eurocrats that they believe that piling more debt on an already indebted country will be the solution. What will be the last straw?

  7. What frightens me about the €uro crisis is the the fear that these idiots will inflict untold damage on us all in the defence of a political pipe dream. As I posted somewhere else if they lived in the real world Darwin would have done them in long ago.

  8. 5,6,7, Agree.

What is more why do these tossers roar around the world thinking they are likely to be able to influence the Greeks?
    A likely bloody story!
Total waste of the pitiful stack of Euros left in the draw!

  9. Yes, jazz, it is very worrying. The damage will be immense because the euroidiots didn’t construct an exit and failed to recognise about three years ago that one would be needed.

  10. Meanwhile the champagne bureaucrats plan even bigger spending sprees and still can’t produce accounts which are signed off by auditors.

  11. Now France has decided that they will try to force Germany to surrender and pay for their cock up.
Now, more than ever, I understand why I’ve always preferred the British over the French.

  12. Apparently the Greek left-wing leader has said that Angela Merkel is “extremely isolated”. (Either she’s isolated or she isn’t.) But she is isolated with the cheque book and the rest may be all together but skint.
