Yes, I know how sensitive cherished colleagues are when it comes to Buck House and its endless soap opera. But p-lease. The ever-loyal DT opines how ‘wonderful to see how (Camilla) has won the public over’, thus deserving the Queen’s gift of the ‘Dame Grand Cross’. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/queen-elizabeth-II/9193856/A-gracious-gift.html
I’d be absolutely astounded if any opinion poll supported such a statement. I believe the public’s perception is still of a manipulative interloper who has succeeded in bagging the rôle she wanted all along. She will never be forgiven for ousting Diana, whatever gloss the Windsors choose to put on it.
Oh please Hugh,
It is obvious that the poor li’l hard-done by princess was playing hide the sausage long before Camzilla hoved into view. Or are you one of those who maintain that Harry looks like Wills?
Ferret – You’ll be going straight to Hell……and for all the right reasons. 🙂

Hi Janus,
Sad and predictable Royalist here, of course.
But, if my monarch, who has done an exemplary job throughout her entire life and has been a credit to my country in all those years (in my opinion) chooses to reward somebody with an honour that is totally within her own gift and owes nothing to PC or prevailing sentiment, then I’m not about to say that she is wrong.
I am just sorry that you feel it necessary to be a sad and predictable Republican yet again. Please change the record?
I don’t know whether Camilla has “won over the public” or not, but when it comes to manipulative Diana takes not only the biscuit but every other award going. I would be sorry to think you were one of those pathetic Brits who got all slushy and sentimental about the late Princess of Wales, Janus. I felt very sorry for the poor girl in many ways, since she had serious mental health problems and not the education or intellect to cope with her position and it is clear that throwing herself down the stairs should have been dealt with more seriously, but every time I see that sly little sideways look, it turns my stomach.
I can’t say I agree with you janus. I think most people were sick and tired of Diana’s antics and quite relieved when she exited stage left so to speak.
The fact that all the royals seem to like Camilla and so does everyone that meets her rather says it all.
Great shame he never married her in the first place, more suitable all round.
What does this Dame Grand Cross mean?
Does it change her title?
Change the way that people have to address her?
Or is it just another nice piece of jewellary to wear on special occassions?
Soutie, it’s just another relic of tyranny (!). Which reminds one of earlier English monarchs who preferred Realpolitik to the moral choice.
I think it is moot, btw, whether the PoW’s adultery preceded Diana’s. It rather depends who you ask, I suspect. The Diana camp reckons Charles introduced the third wheel to the marital bike soon after the nuptials and well before Diana sought riding lessons. Who knows, except one of the PoW’s warders? Diana’s mental weakness was no help but hardly a reason for Charles to abandon her.
As for Camilla being liked by ‘all the royals’ – I doubt it. Diana had a lot of friends who considered her badly treated from Day One – and they are still around.
I think there’s a difference between “all the royals” and Diana’s “lot of friends”, who are still around but not royal – or do you count Fergie?
Morning Janus (me again ;))
So it’s not as though The Queen gave her half of Wales along with the new broach (or is it a necklace?)
Ah, well! When is a royal not a royal? Pippa, for example? Fergie? She only ever had one friend methinks – herself.
You’ve broached a big one there, Soutie! 😉
No sympathy from me either on this one, Janus.
I agree with Sheona’s sentiments: every time I saw that sly little sideways look, my stomach turned.
Diana wanted the glory of the ‘job’, but wasn’t prepared to do the hard work involved, Camilla doesn’t seem interested in the glory – and has, in my view, behaved with the sort of dignity that is expected of the wife of a Royal.
It still annoys me that Diana was allowed to retain the title of the Princess of Wales – quite unconstitutionally.
You are getting muddled, Janus. Of course Pippa isn’t a royal and Fergie is no longer one though I agree there is “a lot”” of her.
Sheona, I do relaise that but Pippa and her ilk get royal treatment and are in the ‘inner circle’.
Janus, you’re beginning to sound like a tabloid. And the tabloids are the only ones who treat “Pippa and her ilk” – just how many siblings does the Duchess of Cambridge have? – like they treat all very minor celebs. Which “inner circle” is this? Do explain!
Sheona, they call the tabloids ‘redtops’ don’t they? Did you mean something like this?
😉
Sheona, the ‘Court’ is composed of a wide circle of hangers-on, as you know. They’re not all HRHs or even Rt. Hons. And Camilla’s rise to glory is evidence of their influence.
G’dag, Soutie! I shall treasure the portrait!
Môre Janus, I’m pleased that you like it. 🙂
That red really suits you, Janus. And I don’t know anything about the court and care even less. It’s like when I read newspaper headlines about Z-list celeb X having split up from Y and think “Who are these people? Who cares?”
Blushy thingy, Sheona.
Only just seen this post Janus. As ever, I am curious to know why you persist with this line. We all know how you feel about the Royal Family and its role, but nothing you ever say on the subject is ever remotely original, amusing, logical, let alone truthful. I would be fascinated to know what is going through your head each time you compose one of these posts.
Sipu, thanks for your concern!
