Door to door security door salesmen that sold security door chains to duped door owners must have laughed at the ease with which they traded this non-safe implement. Simple to install and operate the door chain was not a very good deterrent against unwelcome callers. The useless door chain was marketed as an extra lock yet the door’s main lock had to be unlocked leaving the chain as the only defence against outsiders.
It would not take much force for a burglar, stalker or restraining order abuser to open the door. A hefty shoulder charge would loosen the screws in the door frame and access would be easy for the intruder. A safer alternative is the spy hole. The householder can see who is outside their door.
Unless the caller puts his thumb against the spy glass in which case after a -Who‘s there? Guess who? – exchange you think you recognise the voice and accordingly, open the door or keep the door closed.
Door to door security door salesmen that sell security door chains rarely inform the purchaser of the possible huge hidden financial costs.
Say for example a burglar, stalker or restraining order abuser charges your door, gains entry but in doing so either dislocates his (or her) shoulder, damages ligaments or any other injury for that matter. It is indeed possible that the burglar, stalker or restraining order abuser could sue for recovery of any medical expenses and future loss of earnings if his (or her) ability to burgle, stalk or abuse is adversely affected.
Soutie – You are a very cynical man….. 😀

Why, thank you OZ 😉
Simple, don’t answer it!
Guests you know are coming, fine, the rest are religious maniacs, salesmen and ne’er do wells, just ignore.
Plus get dogs that tear and raven the back of the door trying to eat putative invaders.
Not much of a problem here where everyone is armed!
Funny that, we never seem to have any uninvited guests, I wonder why?
Indeed, but describes the situation in the UK, in spite of all Wavy Davy’s promises.

Me too.

On topic, I have just written a short guide to home security for my guys here, if anyone is interested I’m happy to share.
Hi Bravo, I would be interested in your guide. Break-ins are common place here and unless you have top of the range security locks and bars, all a burglar needs is a strong screw driver and a shoulder.
Sipu, I’ll send it as soon as I get a copy from my work PC.
I’d be interested too, Bravo, even though a potential scumbag would have to get past this particular owner
I naturally assume claws and lots of teeth would be involved, together with a temporary abrogation of ‘yooman rites’ on the part of said scumbag.
