Whatever are they doing to cricket?

Cricket enthusiasts only.

OK, I’m a couple of months behind the times, but it was only today that I learnt about “split innings” one day cricket and, even worse, about 5ives.

Australia is actually going to change this year’s domestic format to a 45-over contest, split into innings of 20 and 25 overs, with 12 players.

The 5ives format, supported by the MCC apparently, splits the game into five innings (for each team) of 5, 10, 10, 10 & 10 overs, give or take 5 overs and with other options depending on the phase of the moon and what the sponsors want in order to fit in with their advertisement schedules.   With 13 players, would you believe?

Utter madness, designed to turn cricket into American baseball.
What say you? 😕

  1. Howzit Bearsy

Must say that it all sounds a bit cockeyed to me.Still, I suppose that countries can do whatever they feel like domestically.

Are you aware of the new rules for One Day Internationals?

2 new balls, one from each end.
Power plays only to be taken between overs 15 – 40 (compulsory power play still over 1 – 10, I think)
    No runners.

These rules will be in effect for today’s S.A. / Oz game this afternoon from Pretoria.

  2. Let us not forget that apart from “test” matches (real cricket) it was Kerry Packer who shaped the game of cricket into the form it is today,

who knows, the latest idea might work, I’ve seen two games like it already and they were bloody great …. quick, simple and full of power.

  3. Just realised I forgot 2!

A batsmen can now be given out for ‘obstructing the field’ when he (the batsman) changes direction of his run to prevent a run out.

    And

The non striker can be run out for setting off too early.

I think that more or less sums up the changes to the ODI rules for this year, besides the technology angle, as I understand it, the ‘TV replays’ are agreed upon by the respective boards before the start of a tour, I’m led to understand that both us and the Ozzies have agreed to use it definitely for the ODIs but I haven’t yet heard about he test series.
