A note for Soutie – and possibly others

Please do not read further unless you are both computer literate, and interested. 😀

In response to Soutie’s comment elsewhere.

  1. It is anticipated that The Chariot will be viewed on a modern HD compliant screen – ie. a 16:9 aspect ratio with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels.
  2. The usable width (x-axis) of the comment area is designed to accommodate images which are approximately 600px wide; the post area accepts a width of 700px exactly.
  3. Vertically (y-axis), with a browser set to display a reasonable minimum of toolbars, the 950px green bar on the right should be fully visible, with appreciable clearance above and beneath it, without vertical scrolling being necessary. In full screen mode (F11), an image with a height of 1,000px can be comfortably seen.

If your display can only show an image 600px high, you have the screen resolution set too low. Or perhaps you have a letterbox shaped screen.

You will not be doing justice to the picture.

Nothing to do with WordPress or how I’ve designed The Chariot or Boadicea has set the rules, it is you, the user, who is not doing justice to your colleagues’ pictures.

Please also bear in mind that the lower you have the screen resolution set, the more long-term damage you may be doing to your eyes. Screens should always be set to the maximum resolution they are technically capable of providing. A modern 22″ display with HD capability won’t set you back more than about $250, possibly less.

I have encountered quite a few people who exclaim that they will never increase their screen’s resolution, “because it makes the text too small”.

Doh!

There is a setting in the control panel which enables the user to set text size independently, whatever the selected resolution.

Have a nice day, now! 🙂

  1. Bearsy, brilliant, thank you.

I recently purchased a Samsung 18.5″ series 30 monitor. On the box (I’ve just checked) it says 1366 x 768. I’m not sure if we looked at other options but this is more than good enough for our family’s use.

I of course have it set to 1366 x 768.

    So, therein lies my problem.

Thanks a million for your time taken to explain this.

  2. I have the same size monitor as Soutie, and Bilby is using a laptop, both set on the highest setting at 1366×768.

    Bearsy.

We could of course add an additional monitor to the laptop and I could upgrade mine, but we’ve just bought two wedding outfits. 😦

  3. So, oh Techie Wizard, Bearsy… do you have any advice on laptops? What should I get? My netbook is slowing down to an unbearable pace and the screen is small.

My wife complained to me that her laptop (HP, 4yrs old ) was so slow and she needed a new one.

I had a look and there was an anti-virus programme (AVG) running continually, I deleted it, downloaded a new one and now her machine is as good as new!

Computers don’t slow down for no reason, unnecessary down loads (and children) are usually the main causes 🙂

Of course, if you install new software on old machines they often can’t cope but have a look in your task manager to see if there’s any unnecessary stuff running.

  5. Nym, My little Toshiba and I are very happy together. It’s got 4 GB of RAM. Somebody said that was ‘a good thing’! 🙂

  6. Thanks Soutie. I’ll see what my son can do with it, but I have a feeling his last update has slowed it down and it is much smaller that I would like… memory wise and screen wise, so I tink I am in the market for a new laptop.

  7. Soutie

I recently complained that my HP lap-top, also 4 years old, was running too slow. The problem was that I upgraded my ‘desk’ lap-top last year and the ‘old’ travel one was half the speed that I’d got used to… I should, perhaps, explain that I always run two lap-tops. One has to be super-light for travelling.

4 GB RAM is a ‘Good Thing”… see my comment to Soutie. The machine I bought last year has 4 GB RAM, whereas my ‘travelling’ computer had only 1 GB… drove me crazy!

    Pseu

Don’t buy a machine with less than 4 GB RAM – no point these days! If you don’t have to move around at home to use the thing, consider getting a decent screen and a keyboard to plug into it. Far better on the eyes and the fingers… 🙂

  8. The Chariot looks fine to me, on everything from my super duper HP desktop with an HD monitor to my Advent Vega Android tablet. and even Mrs FEEG’s (ptooeey!) iPad.

  9. OK Guys, fair enough.

So I closed my HD display and had a squiz on my lappy screen, which by sheer chance happens to be 1,366 x 768. Trotted off and had a look at Tocino’s picture of a tree.

Sure, I could only see part of it.

But being in Chrome, I held the CTRL key down and then pressed the ‘-‘ key (on the numeric pad) twice, and could then see the whole pretty piccie with no trouble.

Of course, I couldn’t then read the text, but a couple of taps on the ‘+’ key while holding the CTRL key down, and all was back to normal.

I’m sure the other browsers have a similar zoom feature, don’t they? 🙂

  10. Yes, Bearsy.

I do know about the zoom feature and indeed it is a reasonable, and inexpensive solution. 🙂

I’m happy with that, until my current monitor fails and then I will upgrade.
