Operation Frankton

“Remembering the secret mission of Cockleshell Heroes”

“A memorial to the Royal Marines who canoed almost 100 miles behind enemy lines to blow up ships in a daring World War II raid has been unveiled in France. But what did the secret mission entail, and why was it so important?

I grew up on tales like this and all the films that the Second World War spawned. I doubt if Iraq Afghanistan will do the same.

  1. I would think that there are deeds just as great, in fact I’m convinced that there are, the problem of course is that in the P C west people are no longer allowed to congratulate them.

How many of your guys do think are in Libya at the moment, 100? 200? heroes every one of them.

(Bit of poetic licence there Toc, I’m including the Yanks, French, and others in my estimate)

I have serious doubts about any boots actually being on the ground at the mo’ Soutie. The press love to make up stories about ninja’s being there. In reality, it is not that easy as was born out by the compromised helicopter incident. You just can’t drop in Special Forces without backup logistics. They tried that once before, think Bravo 20 and that debacle.

For myself, whilst not wishing to put down the courage of any young men today, it is just that WW2 was just that, a World War and possibly required a different mindset hopefully, we will never see the likes again.

    Edited to add an afterthought.

Another reason you would never see anything like this again, is because rather than carrying Marines and canoes, the sub would have been carrying Cruise Missiles.
