Super Rugby to respect Christchurch victims

Red and black armbands

Those of you watching this weekends Super Rugby matches may be wondering about the red and black armbands, all teams  and officials are wearing them as a mark of respect to the victims of the earthquake.

Christchurch’s home team, The Crusaders play in red and black, hence the decision.

There will also be a minutes silence before all games and flags are to be flown at half mast at the respective stadia.

The Crusaders were due to play the Hurricanes today, the match has been cancelled and a draw declared.

The Crusaders stadium has been badly damaged, their next 2 games have been rescheduled for Nelson while the authorities take stock.

Our thoughts will be with the people of Christchurch today.

  1. Soutie – thanks from me too. Nice to see sport pulling together as usual. I was in Chch when the cricketing world came together for a charity international in support of the Tsunami – I met Murali and Shane Warne amongst others and they were truely inspirational in their selfless attitudes.

As a former Chch resident and big Crusaders fan I was saddened to hear this morning that the game was cancelled. For a rugby mad city to feel that rugby shouldn’t go on shows how deeply affected the city has been by the quake.

On a separate note, Sky TV appears to have decided not to show any Super XV highlights this season which I’m sure will upset the entire bar staff of West London!

  2. Hi Soutie

Thanks for this as well. There are going to be minute silences at all the Six Nations matches this weekend. As you say, our thoughts are with the Cantabrians and all of the folk of New Zealand at this tragic time for them.

I had missed the fact that Super XV had started and will be now be watching Super Rugby this afternoon as the Depressingly Inept Rugby is not being played until tomorrow afternoon when Scotland lose to Ireland at Murrayfield. Sharks v Blues will be a tasty prelude to the mayhem that I hope will be taking place at Twickers when England play France.

I see that the Bulls had a bit of a struggle last night against the Cheetahs.
