Lillian (I could change the world)

It was the bleakest day of the blackest hue
The day you broke my heart in two
You were the fish I couldn’t catch
The fates decried we were not a match

I loved the way you poured
In that chemistry class of Mr Ford
Sulphuric acid into the test tube
A waltz as good as the Danube

I loved so much your French pronunciations
That I thought you had Gallic relations
Yet the laissez-faire attitude you deployed
To romance, was it a ploy you enjoyed?

I loved you from the first look in first year
To all in registration it was crystal clear
I took the plunge in year four, I asked you out
You rejected me without a shadow of a doubt

I loved you and I love you still
As long as I draw breath, I always will
Wherever you are, this is a call from the spurned man
Take care, good luck, a last goodbye, Lillian
