A great man has died

I have just heard that Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, has died. One of the truly great men who have, or will have changed, history. Requiescat in pace

Yes, FEEG, I’ve just read this on the Telegraph site. I don’t think many of us who watched it will ever forget his first steps on the moon.

    RIP Neil Armstrong.

Who can ever forget the trepidation and fear we felt with the launch of the Gemini and Apollo missions and of course the absolute relief of their successful accomplishments?

To this day I’ve looked at the moon with my children and marveled that man actually walked up there!

The family statement suggests ” the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink. “ I think I’ll just do that tonight ;)

    RIP Neil Armstrong.

I think the moon landing was one of those moments that strikes such a general resonance in the human spirit that we all remember precisely where we were at the time. I was in training in Catterick, crammed into the small TV room in the accommodation block with most of the other recruits – maybe 50 -odd of us.

I was in an apartment in Weybridge (they don’t do flats there) awaiting the birth of no. 2 daughter.

In Santa Eulalia (Ibiza) on vacation, 30 days before leaving the UK for Canada. We saw the landing on TV in a store window, it was about nine pm as I recall.

Oh dear, can’t even remember where I was in 1969!
Apart from trying to beat the Russians I can’t see that it ever did humanity much good except for non stick coatings! Nevertheless a very brave man as they all were that went in those horrible little capsules.

At the time of the first moon landing I was on a gliding holiday at an airfield in Kent. There was battered old black and white TV in the bar, and all the members of the course, including the instructors, sat around the TV watching for all to unfold. By the time, he had walked on the moon, we were all a bit tired and emotional. About two hours later, we had to do a daily inspection of the gliders and the course started again. It is amazing how quickly you wake up when shot up to 1000 feet in a few seconds on the end of a winch cable!
